Aberdeen social care worker convicted of embezzling over £16,000 from vulnerable adult struck off

Posted: 18th May 2026

An Aberdeen social care worker who was convicted of embezzling over £16,000 has been struck off by the care watchdog.

Gail Mackie was convicted of her offending, which occurred over a two-year period between November 1, 2021 and October 31, 2023, at the Sheriff Court on October 14, 2025.

The offences were said to have occurred across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, and ended up with £16,081.84 being stolen from an adult with additional support needs.

An investigation was launched by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) following Ms Mackie’s conviction.

Their report adds: “Social service workers should be truthful open honest and trustworthy. They should not behave while in or outside the work and anyway that would bring their suitability to work in social services into question.

“You have been convicted of embezzling a significant sum of money. The victim of this crime is an adult with additional support needs.

“This raises serious and justifiable concerns over your trustworthiness and your suitability to work with vulnerable members of society. It calls into question your judgement and displays a serious values issue.”

Ms Mackie accepted responsibility for her actions and is said to have shown a “good level” of insight and reflection into her offences while co-operating with the investigation.

However the SSSC deemed her removal from the register to be the only appropriate course of action given the lengthy period of offending and the sum of money embezzled.

The notice came into effect on Tuesday, May 12.
