Course outline:

This webinar explores the critical safeguarding role of early years educators in protecting non-mobile and non-verbal children, those who are most vulnerable and least able to communicate harm.

It will examine why safeguarding in early years must go beyond statutory compliance and be understood as a moral responsibility. Participants will gain insight into how harm may present in subtle and often overlooked ways, and how professional curiosity and observation are essential in identifying early concerns.

The session will cover:

  • Why non-mobile and non-verbal children are at increased risk
  • Recognising subtle safeguarding indicators, including changes in behaviour, feeding, and physical presentation
  • The importance of understanding “what is typical” for each child
  • The role of educators as advocates and the importance of trusting professional instinct
  • The value of high-quality safeguarding training and continuous professional development
  • Using supervision as a reflective safeguarding tool
  • Embedding a strong safeguarding culture across early years settings

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why non-mobile and non-verbal children are particularly vulnerable to harm
  • Identify early signs and indicators of abuse or neglect in babies and young children
  • Apply professional curiosity and observational skills in safeguarding practice
  • Demonstrate confidence in raising concerns, including when based on instinct
  • Understand the importance of supervision in strengthening safeguarding practice
