Course outline:

This one-day training course is tailored for Educational Guardians fulfilling the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), but is also highly relevant for others responsible for safeguarding within their organisation. The programme is designed to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to meet safeguarding responsibilities with integrity and in line with statutory expectations.

Training topics will include:

  • The role of the Educational Guardian and DSL in safeguarding
  • Legislative and statutory frameworks
  • Thresholds for child protection and key categories of abuse
  • Contemporary safeguarding concerns
  • Safeguarding files and accurate record-keeping
  • Learning from Serious Case Reviews
  • Participating in statutory and early help meetings
  • Professional conduct, Position of Trust, managing allegations and low-level concerns
  • Escalation procedures and whistleblowing.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand legal and regulatory safeguarding requirements and partners
  • Understand current safeguarding risks and issues
  • Be able to respond appropriately to concerns, including navigating referral pathways and working with external agency
  • Understand and apply thresholds for child protection and early help.

Dale Wilkins, Senior Director, BSA and BSA Group

Dale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter, the annual Safeguarding Conference, the Safeguarding Forum. He has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our overseas members.

For 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit.


Dr Mariya Ali, Director, SACPA

Mariya is an internationally recognised safeguarding and child protection expert with over 20 years’ multidisciplinary experience. She has held senior advisory, academic, legal, and leadership roles, including serving as Maldives Minister of Gender, Family, and Human Rights, leading reforms in child protection law and policy. Internationally, she has advised UNICEF, UNDP, and ECPAT on child sexual abuse, exploitation, and protection systems. Holding qualifications in law and child psychology, she has published widely on child rights, online safety, and trauma-informed practice. Mariya’s strategic vision, policy expertise, and frontline insight equip her to bring both global perspective and local understanding to SACPA’s mission.
