MATs worried about condition of school estates

Posted: 8th October 2025

Multi-academy trust (MAT) leaders have raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of school buildings due to stretched funding.

A new report by the Queen Street Group (QSG), shared by TES magazine, highlights that many school buildings are now classed as “beyond life”, with a growing number requiring urgent repair to remain safe.

For safeguarding leads, this issue has direct implications. The physical environment forms a critical component of safeguarding practice with ongoing maintenance issues and subpar decor increasing the potential for negative outcomes including absenteeism.

As school estates continue to age and funding remains tight, safeguarding teams will play an increasingly central role in identifying, reporting, and mitigating environmental risks to pupils and staff.
