Job Description

About this job

We have an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and committed Newly Qualified Social Worker to join our Children’s Care & Support services. These positions will be in our Family Support and Safeguarding service. We will provide you with support in your first year of employment to improve your confidence and capability as social workers and support your own continuing professional development.

There will be a range of social work duties and responsibilities that NQSWs will carry out, gradually building your experience and confidence as a social worker. You will be expected to underpin all of your work with a commitment to relationship-based practice and ensuring that the voice of the child is evident throughout.

This is subject to you successfully passing your Degree in Social Work. As an NQSW you will be required to follow the 12 Months ASYE Programme for your first year. The programme also assesses whether you have attained the right skills and ability to progress as a Social worker. It therefore also acts as your probation period.

The ASYE is a 12 months programme designed to help you to develop your skills and strengthen your professional confidence. Over the year it is expected that you will consolidate your learning from the degree and develop knowledge and experience in your employment setting. It will provide you with access to regular and focused support and development and set out what is expected of you by the end of your first year in employment.

Although you will be placed in a specific team, as part of your ASYE year we aim to provide you with experiences of shadowing and observing within other teams, so that you gain a wide understanding of the journey of a child through social care systems.

If you successfully complete your ASYE programme you will be awarded a certificate, showing you have achieved the skills required to be a Social Worker. You will therefore have the opportunity to progress your career within Barking and Dagenham council by applying for any Social Work posts that may be available.

Special requirements for this post

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and a comprehensive screening process will be undertaken on successful applicants including a Disclosure check (Applicant Declaration must be completed and returned with application).
