Job Description

Canoe Wales is seeking a new Lead Safeguarding Officer to ensure we continue to maintain the highest standards in our approach to safeguarding and child protection. You will have the primary responsibility for the initial management and investigation of all safeguarding concerns for both adults and children and for ensuring the implementation and regular review of procedures to safeguard children and adults in the organisation. You will be a visible source of support and advice for club safeguarding officers.

Over the past three years, Canoe Wales has made major changes to our systems and procedures for safeguarding, achieving Level 3 of the NSPCC Safeguarding Standards and making good progress toward broader awareness and understanding of safeguarding throughout paddlesport in Wales. Your job will be to build on this foundation to continue this momentum – ultimately making Canoe Wales an example of best practice in safeguarding in sport.

You will report directly to the CEO and will work closely with the Canoe Wales Safeguarding Case Management Group and the Board of Directors’ Safeguarding Lead.

You will be an experienced safeguarding professional, with at least three years of experience managing safeguarding cases and excellent knowledge of best practice and legal frameworks for safeguarding and child protection. While it is not essential to have experience of safeguarding in sport, knowledge and experience of sport safeguarding as well as knowledge of Welsh safeguarding law would be an advantage. As part of our commitment to a diverse workforce that reflects our community, we also strongly encourage Welsh speakers and candidates from underrepresented groups to apply.

This is a part-time role and you will have flexibility to set your own work schedule, but you will also need to be available at short notice and to regularly check messages as you will be the first point of contact for any concerns reported to Canoe Wales. Should a serious case require more than 7.5 hours in a given week, you will also be expected to occasionally work more than your hours in agreement with the CEO, and you will be paid at the same rate for these additional hours.
