With over 1250 churches and 6 Dioceses, each led by a Bishop, the Church in Wales serves a nation of great contrasts, with prominent agriculture and village life, cities which have grown to become major commercial centres and a country with a number of well regarded universities. The Church touches all aspects of life through the work of its lay and ordained leaders and volunteers, based in every community in Wales. 2020 marked the centenary of the Church in Wales, and whilst doors have sometimes had to be closed in the midst of the Covid pandemic, the Church still serves the people of Wales thanks to an explosion of creativity in the online space. Being a Safe Church is something to which all in the Church in Wales aspire, the better to ensure that all can live full and safe lives in our communities. Safeguarding is an area of work that requires constant vigilance, adaptability and willingness to improve.
As our Director of Safeguarding, your role will be to ensure that our goal of safeguarding being at the heart of all we do goes far beyond being simply an aspiration and becomes an accurate, externally verifiable description of the Church in Wales. You will provide strategic leadership to the work we do to ensure that policies, standards and practice across the Province are exceptional. You will develop effective relationships with the range of our partners across Wales to be seen as a credible and respected leader with both external organisations and internal partners including Bishops, clergy and lay volunteers. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will lead the teams who ensure we deliver on our safeguarding responsibilities.
You will be an experienced leader in the safeguarding field. You will have a proven track record of developing and implementing effective policy, practice and training that serves to keep people safe. You will be an effective relationship builder comfortable with being both a trusted adviser and challenger at senior levels where needed, as well as a leader who can empower and develop their team.
This role has the potential to affect significant impact across the Church in Wales to ensure that people remain safe within their worshipping communities, and this role affords the opportunity to make lasting change at a strategic level. This is a demanding but rewarding role based in Cardiff and is a unique chance to play your part in helping transform the life of the Church in Wales for future generations.
