We are a medium sized grass roots charity working with refugees and asylum seekers across the UK. We are recruiting a Direct Aid Coordinator to join our rapidly expanding team and coordinate the efforts of our 20 groups of direct aid volunteers who support thousands of refugees. Reporting directly to the CEO this is an excellent opportunity to work for a great cause and gain experience of the UK asylum system and working directly with refugees. Whilst this is a challenging position, you will be given a thorough induction and will be working alongside the CEO and other experienced team members.
There are complex challenges to meeting the varying needs of thousands of asylum seekers spread around the UK; aid is needed in various locations and the people we support have many day-to-day needs, from help registering with a doctor, to emotional support, to understanding and accessing their legal rights. Candidates will need naturally strong organisational skills and have the temperament to make numerous important, and compassionate, decisions every day.
With a changing team of more than 600 volunteers assisting us in 2021, the relationships you build with your voluntary team leaders will be key to the success of this role. We have recruited some strong team leaders who are highly valued and truly live our values.
The Direct Aid Coordinator will be required to: co-ordinate operations and lead teams distributing aid to refugees in challenging situations; manage and motivate teams of volunteers; supervise data gathering for advocacy purposes; liaise with other NGOs, local government and Home Office personnel; report to management on the above.
The refugee crisis is politically controversial, and the debate and sensitivity around this topic can be intense. An awareness of the risks and consequences of public actions and statements by of our personnel is therefore necessary.
Characteristics
The candidate needs to display clear leadership ability, with the capability to act with initiative and drive in a variety of situations. Requires a positive mental attitude with a warm friendly persona, who will be able to motivate and enable volunteers to complete challenging jobs over long hours and coordinate service delivery across the regions. Also needs to be aware of risk management and safety issues, safeguarding and compliance. Will be required to present a collaborative attitude towards other NGOs.
Functions
Coordinate the work of volunteers across the country, managing volunteer motivation and expectations, and encouraging best practise and inspiring optimal behaviours. Will have the ability to challenge and motivate people to approach new situations whilst recognising individual limitations and difficulties. Will enable a good working environment by mediating volunteer differences and leading by example with acceptance of a range of attitudes, backgrounds and cultures, recognising that each volunteer has an ability to contribute if utilised in the right manner.
Manage large volumes of data to ensure that reporting is accurate and comprehensive, keeping up with the many reports that come in from around the country and what can be fast paced information activity and developments. Monitoring and reporting on the activity of the groups so that performance can be measured and optimised.
Attending external meetings representing the charity and contributing to its overall aims and objectives.
