Course outline:
This seminar explores how educational professionals can support children and young people experiencing gender dysphoria or questioning their gender identity. Grounded in current research and practice, the session provides introductory age-appropriate guidance within the context of education.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand and respond appropriately to those presenting with gender dysphoria and those who are gender-questioning
- Be aware of language around the topic as well as the legal requirements for schools (with particular reference to the Equality Act)
- Review the most recent thinking and research around the best way to support and safeguard those with gender dysphoria.
Speaker:

Nicola O’Brien is the Director of Safeguarding and DSL at Felsted School in Essex. She has worked in education for nearly 30 years, mostly within boarding leadership and safeguarding. Formerly Chair of a Special Interest Group on Gender Dysphoria for the AoCPP, she is now co-Chair of the Safeguarding in Education group for the same organisation, a Safeguarding Adviser for the Diocese of Westminster and runs a cluster group to support DSLs in independent schools in Essex. In addition, she has NSPCC accreditation as a safeguarding trainer, is an accredited Safer Recruitment Trainer and is a trained supervisor.
