Course outline:
This seminar explores how educational professionals can support children and young people (CYP) experiencing gender dysphoria or questioning their gender identity. Grounded in current research and practice, the session provides introductory age-appropriate guidance within the context of education.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand and respond appropriately to CYP presenting with gender dysphoria and those who are gender-questioning
- Be aware of language around the topic as well as the legal requirements for schools (with particular reference to the Equality Act)
- Review the most recent thinking and research around the best way to support and safeguard CYP with gender dysphoria.

Nicola O’Brien, Director of Safeguarding and DSL, Felsted School
Nicola O’Brien is the Director of Safeguarding and DSL at Felsted School in Essex. She has worked in education for nearly 25 years, mostly within boarding leadership and safeguarding. She is Chair of a Special Interest Group on Gender Dysphoria for the Association of Child Protection Professionals and has founded a cluster group to support DSLs in independent schools in Essex. In addition, she has NSPCC accreditation as a safeguarding trainer, does safeguarding consultancy work and is a trained supervisor.
