Course outline:
Agencies and organisations with safeguarding responsibilities are required to have whistleblowing policies. Escalating safeguarding compliance and integrity concerns before progressing to whistleblowing can be challenging and stressful. Recent reviews, such as IICSA, Whyte and Sheldon, demonstrate the impact of failure in escalation, and this has informed discussions about a system of mandatory reporting in situations that involve breach of positions of trust.
This webinar uses case study examples to provide an overview of internal and multi-agency escalation procedures. It examines the features of systems that demonstrate best practice and those that are inadequate in their design.
Training topics will include:
- Examples of best and inadequate practice
- Features of blockers to effective escalation which indicate unsafe organisations, partnerships, and multi-agency teams
- Escalation routes that are available when there is a system blocker within organisations or within multi-agency safeguarding partnership work
- Supporting reporters under pressure.
Learning outcomes:
- Increased knowledge and understanding of features and blockers to effective escalation of safeguarding concern
- Increased confidence in escalating inter-agency safeguarding concerns through locally agreed protocols
- Feel more prepared for the possibility of mandatory reporting of position of trust concerns and in developing pathways for support of reporters under pressure.
