Course outline:

This session will look at the latest guidance, trends and headlines in online safety. It will highlight the benefits that are to be gained from the online world and also look at the challenges and risks in a balanced way. The latest research will be shared along with some strategies for colleagues working with children and young people and children and young people themselves. 

 This webinar will support knowledge and confidence of practitioners and leaders responsible for oversight of safeguarding and online safety, including those involved in risk assessment, delivering online safety interventions and curriculum. The event is suitable for colleagues working in education, health, youth services, early help, private, charity and third sector organisations. 

Training topics will include:

  • Provide an overview of the latest guidance, trends and headlines in online safety 
  • Signpost useful sites and resources to inform and educate about online safety 
  • Review strategies for meaningful engagement with children and young people as they navigate the online world 
  • Signpost links to support risk assessment, intervention and education sessions with young people who are particularly vulnerable online. 

Learning outcomes:

  • Delegates will review how `Education for a Connected World’ framework can support their digital safeguarding activity 
  • Delegates will have a greater understanding of key guidance, legislation and trends 
  • Delegates will be signposted to the latest useful sites and resources to inform and educate about online safety and managing online life.

Speaker:

Karl Hopwood

Karl is an independent online safety expert and member of the UK Council for Internet Safety (UKCIS), contributing to its evidence, education and early warning groups. He also serves on the UK Safer Internet Centre advisory board, the Roblox Trust and Safety Board, and has advised TikTok on harmful online challenges. Karl regularly contributes to Internet Matters and has delivered Ofcom-commissioned training. A former primary headteacher, he has worked with CEOP, BECTA, the European Commission, the UN and local authorities. He is an in-house consultant for INSAFE, Chair of Childnet International, and Chair of SACPA’s executive committee.
