Parents warned over ‘tracker hack’ that lets cybercriminals stalk your children – check common gadget for danger sign

Posted: 1st September 2023

PARENTS have been warned about cybercriminals who may try to track their children’s location.

A lot of parents will give their children a wearable tracker to locate their whereabouts.

You might think this is keeping your child safe, however, cybercriminals can hack these devices.

In a blog post, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky elaborated on the potential dangers of these devices.

The firm noted that because these products are being produced so quickly, developers often fail to test them for vulnerabilities.

Moreover, many of these new devices have no antivirus software for them, or there’s no available interface to employ security solutions.

“This plays rights into the hands of hackers, who can connect to a smartwatch and spy on the wearer, or download a Trojan onto it to steal valuable data,” Kaspersky said.

“In addition, a smartwatch or tracker is yet another device you need to buy, monitor its battery, wrestle with the settings,” the firm added.

As a solution, the firm proposes to just download the Kaspersky Safe Kids app onto their smartphones.

This allows parents to not only monitor their kids’ movements in real-time but is much harder to hack into.
