Designated Safeguarding Lead

Wilds Lodge School is an independent 38 week specialist boarding and day provision for boys and girls (girls are accepted as day students only) with social, emotional and mental health difficulties aged between 5 and 19. All the students at the school have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). It was established in 2007 and aims to place an equal emphasis on the educational, social and psychological development of our students. The key to the success of the school is a strong ethos, developed by a highly experienced and capable staff, and the strength of the relationships between the staff and the students.

The school draws nationally from Local Education Authorities and currently has 100 students of which a small percentage are day students. It offers fortnightly boarding provision although in practice, most return to their families weekly. The students are grouped into five residential houses with close regard to their chronological age, their social needs and their personal maturity. The main needs of pupils with SEN at the school are social, emotional and mental health difficulties and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.Safeguarding Duties and Responsibilities:

  • to uphold the School’s policies relating to safeguarding & child protection, behaviour, Health & Safety and all other relevant policies
  • to promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible, and come into contact with
  • to ensure full compliance with all statutory regulations, in particular Keeping Children Safe in Education, other relevant staff of the school or local Children’s Services as appropriate.

All post holders are subject to appropriate vetting procedures and a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

Job Summary:

Wilds Lodge School is recruiting for a Designated Safeguarding Lead. The DSL will take lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the school. They will take part in strategy discussions and inter-agency meetings, and contribute to the assessment of children.

They will advise and support other members of staff on child welfare and child protection matters, and liaise with relevant agencies such as the local authority and police. They will be involved in staff training/induction and implementation of safeguarding initiatives. They will ensure quality assurance across the school, to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and education, care and independent school standards. They will be responsible for auditing and working with external professionals in monitoring and evaluating the safeguarding policies and procedure within school.

Some safeguarding activities may be delegated to deputies, although the DSL will retain lead responsibility for the work of deputies and will ensure it is completed to the highest standard.

Salary: **

  • £30,000 – £35,000 per annum, dependent on experience and qualifications

Person specification: **

  • The post holder will have experience of safeguarding, child protection and complex cases
  • The post holder will be required to work outside of term-time when required. This may involve attending professional meetings or making safeguarding referrals
  • Work closely and cooperatively with colleagues from a variety of professionals
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written form
  • Work flexibly and be open to change
  • Work to agreed quality standards as expected by CSCI,HMI and Ofsted
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equality for all staff and pupils
  • Work with information technology
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Work in a challenging environment
