Wellcome supports science to solve the urgent health challenges facing everyone.

We support discovery research into life, health and wellbeing, and we’re taking on three worldwide health challenges: mental health, global heating and infectious diseases.

The Ethics, Governance & Compliance team is looking to recruit a Safeguarding Lead, to ensure Wellcome identifies and manages all safeguarding risks across the organization, such that we protect those with whom we come into contact (and especially those in at-risk groups) from harm.

The Safeguarding lead will be responsible for:

  • Develop and manage a cross-organisational risk register, working with all teams across Wellcome to identify safeguarding risks and implement controls and mitigations
  • Ensure Wellcome has an appropriate and fit for purpose safeguarding policy environment and safeguarding procedures.
  • Develop and implement engaging safeguarding training, communications and resources for all staff and those who specifically engage with at risk groups.
  • Ensure that Wellcome’s safeguarding responsibilities flow through our grant chain, by the development of appropriate policies and procedures for safeguarding in grants (including bullying and harassment), including engaging with UKCDR and other stakeholders on safeguarding in international development research matters. And provide safeguarding advice and guidance to all teams as needed
  • Handle the escalation off specific safeguarding incidents, including reporting to multi-agency safeguarding hubs, police, the Charity Commission etc. as required.
  • Work closely with a broad range of other internal and external contacts across the business, including (but not limited to) people, mental health, legal, internal audit, communications, institutional funding, and risk.
  • Act as Wellcome’s subject matter expert in safeguarding, and openly share such knowledge across the organisation.

 

Experience & Skills

  • High level of safeguarding knowledge
  • Experience in relation to safeguarding young people and/or those with mental health problems highly desirable
  • Experience in safeguarding at-risk groups in relation to the operation of a publicly accessible venue (museum/library)
  • Experience establishing an effective safeguarding framework, ideally with experience within a grant making charity.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively with employees at all levels, with highly-developed interpersonal and diplomatic skills, political acumen, intellectual rigour, sound judgement and the ability to advise, influence and challenge appropriately.
