Job Description: Safeguarding Assistant (full time, term time only)

THE ROLE:
To assist the Designated Safeguarding Lead Team with the efficient management and organisation of the school’s safeguarding duties. The Safeguarding Assistant will share the academy’s vision and the belief that all young people can achieve. Other necessary qualities include confidentiality, efficiency and being able to work on your own initiative and under pressure and a willingness to contribute to the wider life of King’s Academy Binfield (KAB) and King’s Academy Oakwood (KAO).

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

  • To support and administer child protection cases, assist in making referrals as directed by the Safeguarding Lead(s).
  • To maintain oversight of My Concern our online reporting system to ensure that concerns are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • To complete referrals to external agencies and maintain full records of support in place for individual students.
  • To assist in creating a culture which recognises and understands the importance of safeguarding.
  • To monitor and coordinate safeguarding provision across Post 16
  • To help coordinate the collection of information as appropriate for Children’s Services and other agencies.
  • To help monitor and update whole school safeguarding training records
  • To collate returns on referrals to external agencies and ensure records are updated accordingly
  • Record students that are on the child protection register.
  • To assist with clerical duties including filing, answering the telephone and taking and passing on messages in a timely manner.
  • To word process documents (editing documents for grammar, spelling and dates), including referrals to external agencies, letters, forms and other items as directed.
  • To photocopy, scan, duplicate (including preparation) and collate items as directed.
  • To deal with queries from outside bodies and liaise with the DSL team with regard to information provided.
  • To enter data as required.
  • To update and maintain, with confidentiality, the school safeguarding system.
  • To prepare and compile reports for external agencies.
  • To take minutes of meetings.
  • To liaise with parents and carers, staff and students.
  • To liaise with other members of the pastoral team as and when required.
  • To use skills such as resilience, initiative and judgement, an eye for detail and the ability to make frequent decisions on a range of issues.
  • To uphold the behaviour policy and decisions made by the school regarding sanctions for vulnerable students.
  • To take responsibility for safeguarding the welfare of all children you are responsible for or come in to contact with including reporting any child protection issues or concerns to the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead Team.
  • To be responsible for the good maintenance, safety and security of offices, equipment, display areas, stock rooms and offices in adherence to Health and Safety regulations and curriculum area and school policy and procedures.

SUPPORTING THE ACADEMY

At an appropriate level, according to the job role, grade and training received, all employees in the academy are expected to:

  • Support the aims, values, mission and ethos of the academy and participate in a team approach to all aspects of school life.
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings and INSET days as required, and identify areas of personal practice and experience to develop.
  • Take appropriate responsibility for safeguarding and student welfare and be aware of confidential issues linked to home/student/teacher/school and keep confidences appropriately.
  • Be aware of health and safety issues and act in accordance with the academy’s Health and Safety Policy.

OTHER DUTIES

  • The post holder may be expected to carry out duties other than those given in the job description where the level of responsibility is similar and he/she has appropriate qualifications or receives appropriate training to carry out these duties
  • To embody the academy’s values both on and off site.
