Summary
We are currently looking to appoint a Housematron for our Senior Girls’ Boarding House, Wavell, who shares our core values as detailed in the Job Pack. The main function of this post is to be a parent figure in the Boarding House and be responsible for the wellbeing of the pupils by supporting the HoM and their House team and ensuring the smooth running of the domestic arrangements in the House. It follows that it is essential for the postholder to live in, for which accommodation will be provided. This post reports to the Housemaster/mistress (HoM) Wavell Boarding House, with functional responsibility to the Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral & Guidance). This post requires the jobholder to have been cleared through the Disclosure Scotland Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme, prior to taking up post.

Responsibilities
Supporting Pupils:
Work with the House team to ensure that appropriate care is given to the pupils and that their individual needs are met. Maintain and enhance a healthy routine of life for each pupil. Deal with disciplinary matters in a firm but caring manner. Liaise with the HoM concerning general health and lifestyle of the pupils. Encourage and guide pupils to cope with the daily routines and challenges of boarding school life. Assist the team to help develop well-rounded ambitious and committed young members of the community.
Domestic responsibilities:
Be responsible for all issued clothing, (except Band and CCF clothing) linen and bedding. Organise and carry out routine laundry changes. Ensure the school uniform is in a good state of repair and that minor repairs to clothing are carried out by the Sewing Room staff. Ensure constant cleanliness and tidiness of the House. Check on any damages and breakages that may have occurred and submit requisitions.
Medical:
Liaise with the Health and Wellbeing Centre staff, as appropriate, in order to share any health, medical and/or wellbeing concerns of the pupils. Be available to pupils to discuss medical and other matters in confidence. Respond to medical emergencies as well as routine appointments, accompanying pupils to medical and other appointments when necessary. Provide limited first aid, as required.
Supporting the HoM:
Directly responsible to the HoM, with whom information should be shared within agreed boundaries of confidentiality. Actively engage in open and professional communication with the HoM, House team, parents, pupils and employees of the School, including the Health and Wellbeing Centre, the catering staff, and Facilities Management Department. Work with the HoM at the end of every session (including half terms) to ensure that the House is safe and secure and left in good order for effective cleaning to take place. Support the HoM in ensuring the House is not left unattended and that pupils are always adequately supervised at all times outside of the teaching day. Assist the HoM with the planning of house activities and to participate in the programme, as required. Assist the HoM in being responsible for the security of the house and pupils whilst on duty.
Child Protection:
The postholder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children with whom they come into contact will be to adhere to, and ensure compliance with, the School’s Child Protection Guidelines at all times. If, in the course of carrying out their duties, the postholder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school, he/she must report any concerns to the Child Protection Coordinator (DHT(P&G)).

This post does not attract relocation expenses. It is a residential position and the Matron is expected to live-in during term time.
A key staff Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA) of £3,000 is currently payable.

• A broad understanding of domestic administration in a Boarding House, housekeeping or educational environment.
• Experience of cleaning work, health and hygiene, laundry needs.
• Experience of planning, organising and managing your time to deliver a high-quality service, making effective judgements that inform planning and would enable pupils to thrive in the House environment.
• Evidence of taking personal accountability and possessing good organisational skills.
• Evidence of building supportive relationships and possessing supervisory or management experience.
• Experience of responding in an effective and appropriate manner to challenges and emergencies, reflecting on lessons learned and suggesting improvements to ways of working.
• Experience of acting to prevent problems by identifying issues, reporting them and providing solutions.
