This is an exciting new pilot in Penumbra that involves working with people who are homeless. An essential part of the pilot is that the successful candidate has lived experience of being homeless and the skills and qualities to support someone going through homelessness. Experience of homelessness may mean: having lived on the street, sofa surfing, having used homelessness services or having lived in Temporary Accommodation.
- Homelessness peer support provides social, emotional or practical help to those experiencing homelessness. Peer Workers who work in services use their lived experience to help other people who are facing similar challenges, and are often best placed to break down barriers and access other support networks.
- The Homelessness Peer Worker will utilise their own lived experience of homelessness to help other people in understanding and supporting the challenges faced by those who are, or are at risk, of homelessness. The Homelessness Peer Worker role will add value to the Penumbra and Scottish Borders Council Homeless teams by sharing their personal experiences of homelessness, working collaboratively in a way that promotes continuous learning, continuous improvement, flexibility, avoids duplication, and is responsive to changing needs.
This new role aims to:
- Promote and achieve positive outcomes for homelessness households.
- Reduce repeat homelessness
- Increased successful outcomes in relation to homelessness prevention.
