We are seeking a Head of Safeguarding for Children and Adults at our busy Acute Trust serving the people of South London. In this key leadership role for the Trust you will be working closely with the Chief Nurse and Director of Infection Prevention and Control who holds board responsibility for safeguarding. You will lead the delivery of the safeguarding plan and continue to foster a culture which encourages high quality practice, knowledge and learning at all levels across all professions, demonstrating sustainable improvement in the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children. This is a varied role which involves working strategically with the Trust’s most senior leaders, in partner agencies, and operational involvement in complex cases related to children and vulnerable adults and providing support to Trust colleagues responding to a distressing and unexpected challenge.
You will also lead a well-established team which comprises the named nurse for safeguarding children, the safeguarding practitioners for adults, the MCA and DoLs lead, the lead for the Learning Disability Liaison service and the lead for the midwifery Safeguarding team. In your role you will work closely with the Divisional Directors of Nursing / Midwifery. As well as working closely with the Mental Capacity team and Learning Disability Nursing team, you will also ensure the Trust supports victims and survivors of domestic abuse effectively. You will also work closely with co-located Third Sector partners, such as Victim Support and Redthread.
Some of your key relationships will be external to the Trust, such as CCG and Local Authority colleagues, and it’s important that you are able to multitask, are outcome focused and able to meet challenging and sometimes competing expectations from a range of stakeholders.
You will be expected to have a clear understanding of the national safeguarding agenda and NHS England’s statutory responsibilities, as set out in the NHS England Accountability and Assurance Framework (2015) as well as key interagency guidance notably London Multi-Agency Adult Safeguarding Policy and Procedures (2019), Working Together to Safeguarding Children (2018) and the Pan London Child Protection Procedures.
You will have extensive experience of complex operational safeguarding work, and be able to swiftly develop your understanding in any areas which are new to you. A key aspiration for this role is to realise and build upon the synergies of children’s and adults safeguarding work therefore an understanding of information sharing practice in a safeguarding context is essential. You will be the Trust lead for Safeguarding Adult Reviews and Safeguarding Children’s Practice Reviews, and will need to be confident in managing qualitative and quantitative performance data, and will need to be confident in writing reports. Alongside colleagues, you will be accountable to the Trust Safeguarding Committee. Importantly, your will understand the importance of working relationships in a safeguarding context. You will be responsible for ensuring that the Trust’s in house Safeguarding training is of the highest standard.
You will work with the Trust legal team on complex cases involving legal proceedings and Court of Protection. You will ensure that the Trust compliant with local and national best practice standards and with statutory safeguarding responsibilities as set out in the Children Act (2004) and the Care Act (2014). You will also be an expert in MCA/DoLS and support the Trust lead in this context.
This role will provide strategic and expert advice on system safeguarding issues working closely with our multi-agency partners including the Local Authority and the Local Safeguarding Boards and Partnerships.
