From self-harm to suicide

12 June @ 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Course outline:

More than 200 teenagers a year are lost to suicide.  As self-harming behaviours reach epidemic proportions the safeguarding community needs to be knowledgeable, confident and agile in the prevention and response activity.  The very real question of how we can support people who are harming themselves, or may be at risk of suicide, has never been more critical.

This webinar explores self-harm and suicide and aims to inform and support colleagues working with people affected by self-harm and suicidal thoughts and plans.

Training topics will include:

  • The prevalence of self-harm and the prevalence of suicide: what are the drivers?
  • What are the links and myths about self-harm and suicide?
  • Important signs and indicators to look out for when assessing suicide risk
  • Key points for safety planning and working with people at risk.

Learning outcomes:

  • Increased knowledge and understanding of the scale and key drivers of self-harming behaviour and suicide risk
  • More confidence in differentiating between genuine links, and myths, between self-harming behaviour and suicide risk
  • Be more confident in assessing signs that indicate suicide risk
  • The ability to develop and implement effective and robust safety planning when working with those who are at risk.

Audience: Welfare and wellbeing workers, counsellors, pastoral support staff, designated safeguarding leads and colleagues with responsibility for oversight and scrutiny of safeguarding and emotional wellbeing.
