DSL Certificate

Course outline:

Safeguarding leads and particularly designated and deputy designated safeguarding leads in schools should undergo refresher training to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out their role.

This one-day SACPA certificate programme delivers the required learning outcomes detailed in Annex C of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023. Topic areas and practice examples include statutory requirements for education professionals in England, but also incorporate international, third sector, and private sector examples where relevant to delegates taking part.

The design of the programme includes a range of teaching methods and encourages case study application of themes and topics.

Training topics will include:

  • Designated safeguarding lead role
  • Safer organisations
  • Legislative frameworks
  • Thresholds
  • Safeguarding and contextual safeguarding
  • Online harm
  • Specific safeguarding topics
  • Child-on-child abuse
  • SEND and vulnerability
  • Prevent duty, exploitation and trafficking
  • Reflecting on emotional wellbeing
  • Early help and working with agencies within statutory frameworks for Children in Need
  • Information sharing.

Learning outcomes:

  • Be clear about role as a safeguarding leader and responsibilities
  • Increase confidence and knowledge of a broad range of contemporary safeguarding concerns
  • Practice applying knowledge of pathways of need and referrals
  • Practice understanding of thresholds of child protection and early help and how to effectively work with other agencies such as schools and contribute to multi-agency safeguarding discussions.
