Course outline:

Delivering safeguarding updates and briefings is a key area of responsibility for safeguarding leads and designated safeguarding leads.  Are you stuck with the same routine updates in your setting?

This webinar focuses on a range of briefing ideas and methods which we hope will refresh, inspire and encourage you to get creative and achieve enhanced results for safeguarding awareness.

Training topics will include:

  • Leading safeguarding and the importance of organisational values and the safeguarding culture
  • Safeguarding compliance and authentic engagement: make sure you don’t have one without the other
  • What is different about teaching, informing and engaging adults?
  • Considering a range of engagement methods and messaging: ideas from the front-line
  • Developing and delivering your safeguarding updates engagement plan.

Learning outcomes:

  • Ensuring that your awareness raising and engagement activity is rooted in organisational values and safeguarding culture
  • Increased understanding of activities for compliance, and engagement, and those that are developed to achieve both
  • Be more confident that the methods and messaging tools used in engagement planning are aligned to what we know about adult learners
  • Feel ready to test out some examples of good practice in your setting.

Audience: Safeguarding leaders, designated safeguarding leads and their deputies.  Colleagues who support the planning, development and delivery of safeguarding awareness programmes and programmes of engagement for safeguarding.

Speaker: Nicola O’Brien, Director of Safeguarding, DSL, Felsted School

Nicola O’Brien is the Director of Safeguarding and DSL at Felsted School in Essex. She has worked in education for nearly 25 years, mostly within boarding leadership and safeguarding. She is Chair of a Special Interest Group on Gender Dysphoria for the Association of Child Protection Professionals and has founded a cluster group to support DSLs in independent schools in Essex. In addition, she does safeguarding consultancy work and is a trained supervisor.
