An Introduction to Safeguarding Level 2 Certificate

Updated for Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2025

A Level 2 Certificate of Attendance is available upon completion.

This essential safeguarding refresher is designed for all staff working with children and young people who are not Designated Safeguarding Leads. It incorporates the latest updates from statutory guidance, inspection standards, and key learning from recent safeguarding reviews and case studies.

The training provides practical, up-to-date information to ensure staff feel confident in recognising concerns, responding appropriately, and fulfilling their responsibilities within a safeguarding framework.

This programme can also be delivered on a consultancy basis, either in-person or online.

Training topics will include:

  • Overview of the legal and statutory safeguarding framework
  • Recognising the signs and symptoms of abuse
  • Understanding specific forms of abuse, including:
    • Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) and Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE)
    • Grooming (including online grooming)
    • Child-on-Child Abuse
    • County Lines
    • The Prevent Duty and recognising signs of radicalisation
  • Responding to concerns: identifying, recording, and reporting abuse
  • Personal vulnerability and professional boundaries

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate increased knowledge of how to safeguard and promote the welfare of children
  • Recognise a wide range of signs and symptoms associated with different types of abuse
  • Understand and describe specific safeguarding risks and how they may present in different contexts
  • Know how to respond to a concern, including how to record and report disclosures or suspicions appropriately
  • Reflect on their own role, responsibilities, and vulnerabilities in the safeguarding process

Speaker:

Dale Wilkins, Executive Director, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance

Dale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards, having previously been a course tutor since 1998.  Dale leads on all safeguarding, inspection and compliance matters for BSA Group, including liaising with ISI, Ofsted and DfE in England, and leading on the group’s work in Scotland and Wales. He trains and delivers consultancy extensively for BSA and SACPA and is Vice Chair of the Group’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Advisory Board (SAFCAB).

For 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board, is a safeguarding trainer for the Methodist Church, is a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra and chair of a small performing arts charity. He also holds volunteer roles in sport and in the Scout Association.
