An introduction to Safeguarding

Course outline:

This programme has been updated to reflect Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022.

This training is a vital safeguarding refresher for those working with children but who are not themselves the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Sacpa Director of Safeguarding, Claire Dan, will take delegates through the legal framework, update knowledge of definitions, signs and symptoms of abuse, consider specific safeguarding issues such as Child Sexual Exploitation, County Lines and preventing radicalisation and provide thorough guidance on identifying, recording and reporting abuse. The session will also invite delegates to consider where they are vulnerable within the workplace and how to handle allegations against staff.

Training topics will include:

  • Legal framework
  • Signs and symptoms of abuse
  • Specific forms of abuse including:
    • Child Sexual Exploitation and child Criminal Exploitation
    • Grooming (including online)
    • Child on child abuse
    • County Lines
    • Prevent
  • Identifying, recording and reporting abuse.

Learning outcome:

  • Increase knowledge of how to safeguard and promote the welfare of children
  • Improve awareness of signs and symptoms of abuse
  • Promote understanding of specific forms of abuse
  • Know what to do and how to report and record any concerns

Speaker: Claire Dan, Director of Safeguarding, BSA Group and Director, Sacpa

Claire is Director of Safeguarding and Director, Sacpa and leads on the provision of safeguarding advice and support to members and the development and delivery of CPD and safeguarding consultancy services. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare, youth justice, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects.  Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency trainer, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.
