SUMMARY:Safeguarding international students
DESCRIPTION:It has always been understood that children who travel great distances from their homes for their education are vulnerable and merit specific thought when developing safeguarding and child protection policies within schools.\nFrom a safeguarding perspective\, there can be added complications relating to the responsiveness of your local authority in supporting international students\, and perhaps even corresponding with an overseas agency. 2020 and the ongoing COVID pandemic has highlighted how important it is that schools are prepared to recognise and respond to the safeguarding needs of their international students. \nSACPA and BAISIS will be running this event virtually via Zoom. Joining details will be sent out to delegates 24-48hrs before the conference with clear instructions. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nCONFERENCE PROGRAMME\n  \nWelcome & Keynote address\n\nAileen Kane\, Director\, Sacpa and Chief Operating Officer\, BSA Group\nAileen has a background in the education and charity sectors and works with government departments including Home Office\, DfE\, DIT\, MOD and FCO\, as well as local authorities and other agencies. Aileen’s mission is to raise safeguarding standards in all sectors in the UK and around the world.\nApril McCoig\, Victims and Partnership Lead\, Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner’s Office\nApril is the Victims and Partnership Lead at the Office of the UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner. Seconded from the Thames Valley Police where she spent the last three years as the force’s Anti-Slavery Co-ordinator\, April’s work supports the delivery of the Commissioner’s work to improve the quality of victim care and support including better identification and referral of victims\, effective support for child victims and promoting the development of positive\, longer term outcomes for survivors.\n\n  \nWorking with local and international agencies\n\nChair: Dale Wilkins\, Director of Safeguarding\, Standards and Accredited Training\, Sacpa and BSA Group\nDale is a child protection specialist\, with over 30 years’ experience working in the education sector. He is currently the Director of Safeguarding\, Professional Development and Accreditation for Sacpa and the BSA Group\, is accredited by the NSPCC\, having completed their ‘Training for trainers in child protection’ and his work includes liaising with government bodies on behalf of the sector as well as delivering child protection CPD to schools. Dale has also been a multi-agency safeguarding trainer for Dudley Safeguarding Children Board. \n\nRobin Watts\, Safeguarding expert and Sacpa consultant\nA former detective with the Met Police\, Robin specialised as a child abuse investigator and worked as a trainer/instructor/consultant\, training Police and Social Workers how to investigate Child Abuse from initial referral to a conclusion. He trains police officers\, social workers and education professionals in the Child Abuse field\, and specialises in the interviewing of children\, and the assessment and investigative approach and safer recruitment training both in UK and internationally.\n\n\n\n  \nCultural sensitivities\, boundaries\, and safeguarding concerns\n\nChair: Caroline Nixon\, Director\, BAISIS and International Director\, BSA Group\nCaroline has worked in international education for 30 years. As Caroline Nixon Education\, she has worked on many successful projects including helping UK schools to establish new overseas branches\, advising an international school opening in the UK\, assisting an educational group to set up a guardianship agency\, and advising schools on academic and pastoral provision for their international students. \n\nLisa Morton\, Head of Pastoral\, Cardiff Sixth Form College\nLisa has been working in education for many years and during her time at Cardiff Sixth Form College she has implemented a number of pastoral programmes and initiatives and is passionate about increasing resilience\, confidence and self-care amongst the student body. In 2018 Lisa founded the CREATE© Portfolio which was awarded the Welsh Independent Schools Council Award last year for Wellbeing Initiative. Lisa is dedicated to providing the very best in pastoral care for all Cardiff Sixth Form College pupils and remains committed to continuously striving for excellence in this area. \n\nJames Kidd\, Vice-Principal (Boarding) and DSL\, DLD College\, London\nJames is Vice-Principal at DLD College London and has a background in boarding schools. With two post-graduate Masters degrees\, an MA in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Nottingham and an MA in Business Management from Kingston University.\nEmma William\, Acting Deputy Head Pastoral\, Head of Boarding and DSL\, Rossall School\nEmma is Acting Deputy Head Pastoral\,  and DSL at Rossall School.\n\n\n\n  \nOnline safety\n\nAileen Kane\, Director\, Sacpa and Chief Operating Officer\, BSA Group\nAileen has a background in the education and charity sectors and works with government departments including Home Office\, DfE\, DIT\, MOD and FCO\, as well as local authorities and other agencies. He is a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the UKCCIS evidence group and education working group as well as on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre and the education advisory board for CEOP. He also sits on Twitter’s trust and safety council where he represents the Insafe network. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe.  Karl is the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is also a trustee of Childnet International.\nKate Hall\, G4 Senior Officer\, Child Protection Team Leader\, CEOP Command/Child Protection Team\, National Crime Agency\nKate is part of the team at CEOP\, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection command\, part of the National Crime Agency\, helping keep children and young people safe from sexual abuse and grooming online.\n\n\n\n  \nMental health and medical care\n\nChair: Jane Graham\, Nurse Advisor\, BSA Group and Lead Nurse\, St Teresa’s Effingham\nTrained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children\, Jane has 27 years of nursing background\, 17 of which is in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU\, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilize and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation\, all medical conditions\, and trauma. \n\nJill Hill\, Nurse Advisor\, BSA Group and Head of Medical Health & Welfare\, Cheltenham Ladies’ College\nJill is Lead Nurse at The Cheltenham Ladies College\, following a long career in Emergency care. As a Senior Sister and Emergency Nurse Practitioner at the John Radcliffe hospital\, she was responsible for staff training and worked in association with Oxford Brookes University to deliver specialist lectures in minor injuries and autonomous practice. She and her team are an integral part of the Pastoral team\, working with students\, staff and key stakeholders to ensure that the overall physical\, emotional and psychological wellbeing of each individual pupil is at the centre of all they do. Jill is a strong advocate for the nursing profession suggesting the unique skills and qualities nurses possess make them the perfect advocates for the students in their care.\nGeorge Peterkin\, Managing Director\, Mind your Health Ltd\nGeorge is Managing Director and Lead Instructor at Mind Your Health. Having worked as a teacher throughout his 20s\, George then made a steady transition into running Mind Your Health Ltd\, a company based in Surrey. With internationally accredited instructors\, George and his team have a primary focus in training educational settings in Mental Health First Aid\, Safeguarding and / or Suicide Intervention skills. These courses are frequently attended by teachers\, parents and even the students in both UK and International settings. Alongside these courses\, George also provides bespoke programmes for all age groups within a school\, along with more focused courses on self-harm\, eating disorders and suicide. George is also currently attending a therapeutic counselling diploma.\nDelyth Lynch\, Deputy Head (Safeguarding and Mental Health)\, Wellington College\nDelyth has been on the Senior Leadership Team at Wellington College for 10 years\, having previously been Deputy Head (Pastoral). This followed a long career in boarding as a Director of Extra-Curricular activities and Housemistress at two schools. Delyth is the Safeguarding Governor and Vice Chair of Governors at a local school and leads the Local Independent Schools DSL cluster group. She has also been a BSA course tutor on the Certificate and Diploma Courses and her work in the area of abuse in boarding schools was cited by IICSA in their recent inquiry into abuse in residential settings.\n\n\n\n  \nCase study analysis\, what would you do? She gained her MBA in Educational Leadership and her PGCE from the Institute of Education in London. She joined MPW from CATS College in Cambridge\, where she was Assistant Principal (Pastoral Care).\nHelen Collier\, Director\, Regent Guardians Ltd\nHelen has more than 20 years’ experience in international education\, having held senior positions in boarding schools in East Africa and across the UK until 2017. She then branched out into Guardianship having gained a clear appreciation of the scale and type of care and support needed by international boarding students\, their parents\, schools and colleges.\n\n\n\n  \nChild protection worldwide: agenda and progress \n\nChair: Caroline Nixon\, Director\, BAISIS and International Director\, BSA Group\nCaroline has worked in international education for 30 years. Prior to COBIS\, Colin taught in the UK\, Far East and Europe and has led educational projects\, in the UK and internationally working with the DFE\, Government Office for London\, Eteach.com and the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames where for 6 years\, he was a member of the school improvement Inspectorate\, with responsibility for school workforce recruitment\, development\, extended schools and leadership succession planning. Colin is a founding member of the International Task Force on Child Protection and a Governor of Geneva English School and a Trustee of the British School in Tokyo.\nStephen Blight\, Senior Advisor for Child Protection\, UNICEF\nStephen Blight is Senior Advisor for Child Protection at UNICEF Headquarters\, leading the team on ending violence against children. Previous roles in UNICEF include Child Protection Advisor for the East Asia and Pacific Regional Office\, where he provided providing technical support and oversight of child protection programmes in thirteen country offices in the region. Stephen has also led UNICEF’s child protection work in three major country programmes: Sudan\, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Prior to his employment with UNICEF\, he served as Country Representative/Director for CARE International\, Oxfam GB and Save the Children UK in a variety of developing country settings. He has also provided expertise as a socio-economist for UN technical agencies and the private sector\, specializing in rural development. He began his professional career with the United Nations Development Programme in Guinea.
