SUMMARY:Managing affluent neglect
DESCRIPTION:  \nCourse outline: \nThe phrase “affluent neglect” presents something of a perceived oxymoron. SUMMARY:Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) certificate (one-day) (Level 3)
DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nSafeguarding leads and designated safeguarding leads in schools should undergo refresher training to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out their role effectively. \nThis one-day Sacpa certificate programme delivers the required learning outcomes detailed in annex C of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023.  Topic areas and practice examples include statutory requirements for education professionals in England\, but also incorporate international\, third sector\, and private sector examples where relevant to delegates taking part. \nThe design of the programme includes a range of teaching methods and encourages case study application of themes and topics including an additional focus on self-care in the role. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe role of the designated safeguarding lead\nRefresh of legal and regulatory frameworks including devolved nations and Charity Commission requirements\nEncouraging a culture of listening to children\nThe importance of information sharing\nVulnerable groups and the impact of trauma\nRefresh of traditional safeguarding signs and indicators and overview of specific contemporary safeguarding concerns such as e-safety\, child-on-child\, exploitation etc.\nMulti-agency working with early help and statutory services agencies.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nUnderstand the importance of the role the designated safeguarding lead has in providing information and support to local authority children social care to safeguard and promote the welfare of children\nEncourage a culture of listening to children and taking account of their wishes and feelings\, among all staff\, in any measures the school or college may put in place to protect them\nUnderstand the lasting impact that adversity and trauma can have\, including on children’s behaviour\, mental health\, and wellbeing\, and what is needed in responding to this in promoting educational outcomes\nAre alert to the specific needs of children in need\, those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)\, those with relevant health conditions and young carers\nAre able to understand the unique risks associated with online safety and be confident that they have the relevant knowledge and up to date capability required to keep children safe whilst they are online at school or college\nCan recognise the additional risks that children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) face online\, for example\, from bullying\, grooming and radicalisation and are confident they have the capability to support children with SEND to stay safe online\nUnderstand and support the school or college with regards to the requirements of the Prevent duty and can provide advice and support to staff on protecting children from the risk of radicalisation\nUnderstand the assessment process for providing early help and statutory intervention\, including local criteria for action and local authority children’s social care referral arrangements\nHave a working knowledge of how local authorities conduct a child protection case conference and a child protection review conference and be able to attend and contribute to these effectively when required to do so\nUnderstand the importance of information sharing\, both within the school and college\, and with the safeguarding partners\, other agencies\, organisations\, and practitioners.\n\nA similar SACPA one day DSL programme is also available on a consultancy basis where organisations have several colleagues in\, or aspiring to be in\, safeguarding leadership roles. He was recently part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

As a qualified solicitor of England and Wales with more than 12 years’ experience advising clients on UK immigration and nationality law\, Kate supports members with all UK immigration matters including UKVI sponsor licence compliance. Kate is a member of the Home Office Education Advisory Group and is the boarding sector representative for this group. Prior to joining BSA in 2022 Kate was Partner and Head of Department at a leading full-service UK law firm. Having resided in state\, preparatory and senior school boarding houses since 2014 with her Housemaster husband\, Kate has a unique perspective of boarding life. \n \nBethan Waddington\, Director\, BAISIS \nBethan Waddington joined the BSA team as Training Manager in September 2017. Bethan has worked in two independent boarding schools in the UK and Switzerland\, the latter as Housemistress to 36 pupils. Following her time in Switzerland\, she was a Pastoral Manager for an inner-city state academy before working in the charity sector for Debrett’s running the ‘Debrett’s Foundation’ training programme. \nIn her role\, Bethan plans and manages all Day Seminars\, Conferences\, INSET and Consultancy\, as well as being Director of BAISIS. She believes boarding can be a positive force for young people and in order to fully support their needs staff can never learn too much. As such she is passionate about the CPD BSA delivers to our pastoral communities in the UK and worldwide. \n \nDale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA and BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n \nSarah Bellotti\, Chair BAISIS and Head Mill Hill International \nSarah was elected BAISIS Chair in January 2022\, having served as Deputy Chair since November 2020.\nSarah started her career in education at an international school in Rome\, Italy and then returned to the UK to take up a post at King’s Ely where she later became Director of King’s Ely International. Since 2014\, Sarah has worked at Mill Hill International as the founding Headteacher. \n  \n \nKarl Hopwood\, E-Safety Expert and Chair\, SACPA \nKarl Hopwood is an esafety expert. He is a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the new UK Safer Internet Centre. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission and several Local Authorities within the UK. As an ex headteacher\, he continues to work closely with children\, young people\, parents and teachers to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl works closely with the Boarding Schools’ Association and supports many of their schools. He is also an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU safer internet programme. \nSimon Hill\, Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, Christ College Brecon \nSimon grew up in Eastbourne\, East Sussex and was educated at Eastbourne College. He gained a BA (Hons) Geography at Kings College London University and a PGCE at the Institute of Education\, London. He started his career as a teacher of geography at King Edward’s School\, Surrey\, before moving to Glenalmond College\, Perth where he was Senior Housemaster. In 2010\, Simon was appointed as Director of Boarding at Brisbane Grammar School\, Queensland\, before moving back to the UK to join Christ College as Deputy Head (Pastoral) in 2016.  His focus is on pupil wellbeing\, the second curriculum and sport of all types.  He also runs the school’s annual pupil exchange programme to Japan. \n  \nSarah Lancaster\, Director of Safeguarding: Children’s rights\, safeguarding and participation\, UNICEF \nSarah Lancaster is the Director of Safeguarding at UNICEF UK and oversees a team of technical specialists that support UNICEF UK’s work around Youth Voice and Influence\, Children’s Rights in Sport and Safeguarding. \nSarah has over 16 years child protection and safeguarding experience\, both within statutory and NGO organisations working with children and young people. In her spare time\, she is also a Cub Scout Leader\, supporting young people in their personal development\, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society\, and gain important skills for life that support their growth and development. \nSarah is passionate and committed to upholding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and uses a rights-based approach throughout all of her work\, ensuring children are not discriminated against and that their voices are amplified and their views listened to. \nBill Prior\, Joint Principal\, The International College\, King’s School\, Canterbury \nBill is founding Joint Principal at King’s International College in Canterbury. He has worked in China\, Scotland\, England and Germany in school management\, development\, teaching and qualifications. He has a First in Chinese from the University of Oxford\, trained as a teacher at Edinburgh University and later returned to Oxford to complete a Masters in Education. He is a Scot and speaks fluent Mandarin and German. \n  \nTom Caston\, Principal\, MPW Cambridge  \nTom Caston is Principal at MPW Cambridge\, as Fifth and Sixth Form College with 50% international students. Tom read Geography at the University of Exeter and subsequently gained an MSc in Managing School Improvement from the University of Reading. He worked in investment banking before starting his teaching career at Shiplake College in 1999. Prior to joining MPW he held senior posts in a number of independent schools\, most recently a Deputy Headship at Framlingham College. \n  \nMark Heywood\, Principal\, The Royal School Wolverhampton \nCurrently Principal/CEO of The Royal School\, Wolverhampton an all-through\, co-ed\, non-selective day and state boarding school of some 1500 pupils in the West Midlands.  Has been in post since 2011\, converting from independent school to State Free School/Academy in 2016.  Over past 40 years he has worked in state and independent schools\, boarding and day settings in London\, Cumbria\, Tyneside and now West Midlands. \nThe Royal School has developed experience in working with Looked After Children (LAC) and UASC for a number of years\, the work of which featured in the Independent Review into Children’s Social Care report of 2022 and works closely with the RNSCF Springboard Trust on their Expert Advisory Group to the Government on the potential benefits of boarding in working with vulnerable children. \nMark has taught geography\, geology\, PE and Games and has a passion for outdoor education and international expeditions. \n \nCarolyn Harrison\, Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, Fettes College \nCarolyn grew up in the Outer Hebrides on the Isle of Lewis. Having studied Modern Languages at Cambridge University\, she joined Fettes College initially as a French teacher but was quickly drawn to the pastoral side of life at the school\, as a Houseparent in both the Prep School and the Senior School for over twenty years. Now as Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, she feels privileged to lead the school’s pastoral team\, supporting students\,families and staff every day. Outside the school gates\, her secret passions are spending time in the Harris hills and Formula 1.

He holds extensive experience tackling a wide range of complex radicalisation cases in various roles\, including as a Social Worker within Children’s Services\, as Channel Coordinator within Prevent and as the Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within an NHS mental health Trust. Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. Thomas is available to deliver Prevent training to a range of organisations\, which will cover the key features of Prevent Awareness and Prevent WRAP\, including CONTEST\, the statutory duty under Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 known as the ‘Prevent Duty’\, Vulnerabilities to Radicalisation\, Extremist Ideology and groups\, Current Threat Level\, and the Channel Panel process. Thomas will provide an opportunity to have a nuanced and critical discussion about this important and complex area of safeguarding .

Julian is creative at networking and making things happen. He is passionate about truth and justice and likes to help others achieve closure with difficult cases.
