SUMMARY:Breaching the position of trust; what we know
DESCRIPTION:Course outline \nThe significance of recognising and respecting the ‘position of trust’ relationship dynamic in safeguarding and child protection is vital in understanding and setting professional boundaries\, relationships and supporting those accessing your services. Recently making headlines through NSPCC’s Close the Loophole campaign and the government extension to the Sexual Offences Act\, protecting those who are over the age of consent for sexual activity but who may be vulnerable to abuse or exploitation by an adult in a position of trust; it is essential that practitioners recognise the importance of the position of trust\, and feel confident in identifying possible breaches. \nThis training session\, delivered by Marcus Erooga\, independent safeguarding and sexual abuse consultant\, will explore what we know\, based on research and evidence\, about breaches of the position of trust\, including key characteristics\, grooming behaviours and common modus operandi. From 1999-2018 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield Centre for Applied Childhood\, Youth and Family Studies. He spent the majority of his employed career in various positions at the NSPCC\, as a practitioner\, team manager and Assistant Director for service delivery\, as well as service and policy development roles relating to child sexual abuse and sexual offending. \nHe has authored or edited some 80 publications on child abuse and sex offender-related issues. Most recently this work has focused on organisational safeguarding. In 2016 he co-authored a review of the literature on organisational risk and protective factors for the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse as well as being Expert Witness in a Royal Commission Case Study. He is an Expert Witness for the IICSA (the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse) Residential Schools inquiry and co-authored the Farrer & CO low-level concerns guidance. \nAs an independent consultant Marcus regularly trains and presents based on his research and undertakes safeguarding work including audits and reviews for a number of organisations. SUMMARY:Training: Safeguarding for professional practitioners
DESCRIPTION:  \nCourse outline \nThis training is a vital safeguarding refresher for those working with children but who are not themselves the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Sacpa Director of Safeguarding\, Dale Wilkins\, formerly a Local Authority Safeguarding Trainer\, will take delegates through the legal framework\, update knowledge of definitions\, signs and symptoms of abuse\, consider specific safeguarding issues such as Child Sexual Exploitation\, County Lines and preventing radicalisation and provide thorough guidance on identifying\, recording and reporting abuse. Nick is determined to increase awareness of domestic abuse and stalking and the devastation caused by these issues and spends a great deal of time campaigning. He has been instrumental in the Trust’s development and fundraising initiatives and works with the police to help improve services for victims. Nick also helps businesses to tackle domestic abuse and stalking in the workplace and is a member of the Public Services Protection Board. \nNick undertakes motivational speaking regularly in his drive towards helping others. He has spoken at Gloucestershire University at the ‘Behind Closed Doors’ domestic abuse and stalking conference and at the domestic abuse masterclass as part of the Gloucestershire Schools’ transition forum. He also undertakes training for Paladin National Stalking advocacy and has presented at the Individual Stalking Advocacy Caseworker (ISAC) accredited training course in London on coercive control. DESCRIPTION:Every day millions of people participate in sport; amateur and elite athletes\, coaches\, referees\, volunteers\, organisers and parents. For the most\, this is a fun and positive experience. And it is crucial that everyone involved in facilitating access to sports of all kinds\, at all levels\, works to ensure this ethos is integral and to keep everyone safe.\nWe all have a duty of care to ensure club safeguarding policies are relevant and being adhered to\, safeguarding teams are trained and can spot the signs of mental wellbeing\, understand positions of trust and recognise areas of risk. Perhaps\, safeguarding in sports has been given too little attention in the past\, but as we see in the media things are changing; with the recent success of ‘close the loop’ campaign\, Sheldon’s review into sexual abuse in football and the IICSA report bought out in June 2020 ‘Child sexual abuse in sports’. \nFrom the pro-coach or safeguarding lead for a large club or organisation\, to the weekend volunteer or parent on the poolside\, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and it is clear we need to do more to ensure sports are safe for all. \nThis event will be running virtually via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:In response to the Ofsted review of sexual abuse in schools and colleges published on June 10 2021\, BSA Group (Sacpa\, BSA) will be joining with GSA to host a free webinar for members looking in detail at the report and its findings\, cross-referencing to existing legislation and guidance and then considering constructive ways in which schools can engage in appropriate dialogue with pupils\, parents and other key stakeholders and formulate a response which will lead to long term change.\nBSA Group Director of Safeguarding\, Professional Development and Accreditation\, Dale Wilkins\, will be joined by GSA Chief Executive Donna Stevens for the session. \n  \nThis webinar is free of charge for members of Sacpa\, BSA\, GSA\, but booking is still required. Please click here to book your place. \n  \n \n  \nSpeaker: Dale Wilkins\, Director of Safeguarding\, Professional Development and Accreditation\, BSA Group  \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards.  In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses.  Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter\, the annual Safeguarding Conference\, the Safeguarding Forum.   He has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our overseas members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner.  After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. \nDale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit. \n  \nSpeaker: Donna Stevens\, Chief Executive\, Girls’ Schools Association\nAs GSA Chief Executive\, Donna is responsible for working with Girls’ Schools Association members and other stakeholders to encourage high standards of education for girls and to promote the benefits of being taught in a largely girls-only environment. She took up her role\, in January 2021\, at a critical time in the education sector\, supporting GSA schools as they shape and navigate their way through the ‘new normal’ which the coronavirus public health crisis has necessitated.\nDonna Stevens was previously Head of Research for the Independent Schools Council\, where she is responsible for overseeing a wide range of projects each year\, such as the ISC Annual Census\, the economic impact of independent schools on the UK economy\, and the impact of independent-state school partnerships. As a result of this\, and her knowledge of the ISC’s other work\, she has gained considerable insight to the issues surrounding the independent education sector and the role it plays within the UK education sector as a whole\, as well as internationally. She is a regular speaker at education sector conferences.\nDonna has a degree in mathematics from the University of Oxford and a post graduate diploma in educational and social research from UCL. Outside of work\, she owns and manages a successful performing arts weekend school which caters for 100 youngsters – including Donna’s own three children – and offers means-tested scholarships to local pupils. Donna also enjoys jogging and spending time with her family.

DESCRIPTION:It has always been understood that children who travel great distances from their homes for their education are vulnerable and merit specific thought when developing safeguarding and child protection policies within schools.\nFrom a safeguarding perspective\, there can be added complications relating to the responsiveness of your local authority in supporting international students\, and perhaps even corresponding with an overseas agency. 2020 and the ongoing COVID pandemic has highlighted how important it is that schools are prepared to recognise and respond to the safeguarding needs of their international students. \nSACPA and BAISIS will be running this event virtually via Zoom. Seconded from the Thames Valley Police where she spent the last three years as the force’s Anti-Slavery Co-ordinator\, April’s work supports the delivery of the Commissioner’s work to improve the quality of victim care and support including better identification and referral of victims\, effective support for child victims and promoting the development of positive\, longer term outcomes for survivors.\n\n  \nWorking with local and international agencies\n\nChair: Dale Wilkins\, Director of Safeguarding\, Standards and Accredited Training\, Sacpa and BSA Group\nDale is a child protection specialist\, with over 30 years’ experience working in the education sector. Dale has also been a multi-agency safeguarding trainer for Dudley Safeguarding Children Board. \n\nRobin Watts\, Safeguarding expert and Sacpa consultant\nA former detective with the Met Police\, Robin specialised as a child abuse investigator and worked as a trainer/instructor/consultant\, training Police and Social Workers how to investigate Child Abuse from initial referral to a conclusion. He trains police officers\, social workers and education professionals in the Child Abuse field\, and specialises in the interviewing of children\, and the assessment and investigative approach and safer recruitment training both in UK and internationally.\n\n\n\n  \nCultural sensitivities\, boundaries\, and safeguarding concerns\n\nChair: Caroline Nixon\, Director\, BAISIS and International Director\, BSA Group\nCaroline has worked in international education for 30 years. As Caroline Nixon Education\, she has worked on many successful projects including helping UK schools to establish new overseas branches\, advising an international school opening in the UK\, assisting an educational group to set up a guardianship agency\, and advising schools on academic and pastoral provision for their international students. \n\nLisa Morton\, Head of Pastoral\, Cardiff Sixth Form College\nLisa has been working in education for many years and during her time at Cardiff Sixth Form College she has implemented a number of pastoral programmes and initiatives and is passionate about increasing resilience\, confidence and self-care amongst the student body. In 2018 Lisa founded the CREATE© Portfolio which was awarded the Welsh Independent Schools Council Award last year for Wellbeing Initiative. Whilst in PICU\, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilize and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation\, all medical conditions\, and trauma. \n\nJill Hill\, Nurse Advisor\, BSA Group and Head of Medical Health & Welfare\, Cheltenham Ladies’ College\nJill is Lead Nurse at The Cheltenham Ladies College\, following a long career in Emergency care. As a Senior Sister and Emergency Nurse Practitioner at the John Radcliffe hospital\, she was responsible for staff training and worked in association with Oxford Brookes University to deliver specialist lectures in minor injuries and autonomous practice. She and her team are an integral part of the Pastoral team\, working with students\, staff and key stakeholders to ensure that the overall physical\, emotional and psychological wellbeing of each individual pupil is at the centre of all they do. Jill is a strong advocate for the nursing profession suggesting the unique skills and qualities nurses possess make them the perfect advocates for the students in their care.\nGeorge Peterkin\, Managing Director\, Mind your Health Ltd\nGeorge is Managing Director and Lead Instructor at Mind Your Health. Having worked as a teacher throughout his 20s\, George then made a steady transition into running Mind Your Health Ltd\, a company based in Surrey. Sophia provides general employment advice around contracts\, policy reviews and settlement agreements\, and advises both employers and individuals on issues relating to exits and recruitment. \nSophia advises a range of clients including schools (including specialist schools)\, universities\, charities\, sports organisations\, business and individuals. Sophia also has experience advising clients participating in public inquiries. \nBefore joining Farrer & Co\, Sophia studied law at the University of Oxford and completed an LLM at the London School of Economics. SUMMARY:Webinar: County Lines - understanding risks and preparing for post-lockdown
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will introduce delegates to County Lines\, the illegal transport of drugs from one area to another\, crossing local authority boundaries. County Lines is a term used within the UK to describe where organised crime networks and gangs recruit or coerce children or vulnerable adults into trafficking drugs across boundaries and into different areas. Providing an update on what we know about County Lines activity\, delegates will be presented with information on how to identify possible County Lines dealing\, recognise signs that young people or vulnerable adults may be involved\, and what to do if you have concerns. \nIn the last year\, in line with lockdown\, we have seen a corresponding dip in County Lines activity during lockdown periods\, but a notable increase when ‘routine’ travel and movement resumes. This is where her passion for working with and supporting vulnerable young people began. In 2008\, and in response to increases in youth violence in Coventry\, she wrote and co-produced with young people “Get My Point” a piece of youth drama which successfully contributed to the reduction in weapon assisted crime. This work saw her presented with a Chief Constable’s Commendation. \nHowever\, it was Nikki became an Offender Manager working with some of the most prolific and complex young offenders that she identified that most\, if not all of children and young people known to the Criminal Justice System\, had a variety of vulnerabilities and unmet need. The recognition of the victim offender overlap resulted in a career change\, moving from policing into the field of substance misuse. \nAs the service manager of a young person’s substance misuse service in Warwickshire\, Nikki developed a number of pathways to improve service provision and support for children who were not actively misusing substances themselves\, but were nonetheless impacted by substance misuse due to having a parent or sibling with a substance dependency. This work was recognised by the Care Quality Commission as being innovative practice which should be replicated nationally. \nNikki went on to work for the Care Quality Commission in 2017 as a Children’s Services Inspector. In this role\, she contributed to and led a number of national reviews\, such as Children Looked After and Safeguarding (CLAS) reviews\, Joint Targeted Area Inspections (JTAI’s) and Local Area Special Educational Needs and Disability Inspections (LA SENDs). She also lent her expertise in the fields of Safeguarding and SEND to develop a number of thematic reviews such as the Control and Restraint in Children’s Home review which is awaiting publication. She remains a bank inspector for the commission. \nIn 2020 Nikki founded and launched Safer Together\, her own training and consultancy enterprise. Safer Together was commissioned in September by Coventry and Warwickshire CCG and Coventry Local Authority Public Health to lead on a Child Exploitation Project on their behalf. He also sits on Twitter’s trust and safety council where he represents the Insafe network. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. As an ex-primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents and teachers to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 13 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. \n  \n  \n  \nSpeaker: Will Gardner OBE\, CEO\, Childnet International \n \nWill Gardner\, OBE is the CEO of Childnet\, a children’s charity working with others to help make the internet a great and safe place for children. Will has been at Childnet since 2000 and has been the CEO since 2009. \nHe is a Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre\, in which Childnet is a partner alongside two other charities\, the Internet Watch Foundation and the South West Grid for Learning\, and in this role Childnet organises Safer Internet Day in the UK. Much of her social work career has been working within local authority children’s social care. She has a wide range of experience at both operational and strategic level and has been a frontline worker\, manager\, principal social worker and Safeguarding Children Board development and strategic manager.\nVictoria has been with the Marie Collins Foundation (MCF) since 2015 where her portfolio includes the development\, delivery\, and enhancement of Click: Path to Protection\, MCF’s unique training programme to enable frontline workers to better protect children harmed online. She has worked with partner agencies to deliver training both nationally and internationally.\nAs well as direct work with children and their families\, Victoria continues to work with a range of professionals including police and social workers around the identification\, investigation\, and response when children have been the victim of abuse\, especially when this abuse has been facilitated by online technology. \n  \nSpeaker: Bill Woodside\, Chief Operating Officer\, Ineqe Group \n \nBill is a founding partner and Chief Operating Officer at Ineqe Group\, where he has specialised in the delivery of safeguarding training and consultancy.\nHe is a former senior Police Officer with over twenty-seven years policing experience\, both in the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and previously in the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). Immediately prior to his retirement he was the Operational Command Unit Commander for Belfast Region and Deputy to the Assistant Chief Constable. In addition\, he was the former President of the European Airport and Seaport Police. \nHe has extensive experience in multi-agency partnerships including specialist forums to engage young people and hard to reach groups. Bill is a Prince 2 certified project manager who has conducted reviews of a wide range of policing and criminal justice functions across the globe. Bill has an honours degree in Law (LLB (Hons)) and a Masters degree in Criminal Justice Management. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute. \n  \nSpeaker: Margaret Gallagher\, Head of Local Campaigns Service\, NSPCC \nMargaret has worked for over thirteen years with the NSPCC\, previously as Local Campaigns Manager for Northern Ireland and since 2019 also as joint Head of the Local Campaigns Service\, a team of seven Local Campaigns Managers across the UK. Margaret continues to lead a range of NSPCC campaigns and awareness raising activities which are part of the preventative public health approach that the NSPCC delivers through national campaigns such as PANTS (The Underwear Rule) and Look Say Sing Play – as well as delivering bespoke local safeguarding campaigns in partnership with community and statutory stakeholders.
