SUMMARY:Safeguarding children with additional vulnerabilities

SUMMARY:Sacpa/Hieda - Level 3 Certificate: Safeguarding for School Nurses and School Nurse Designated Safeguarding Leads
DESCRIPTION:  \nCourse outline \nThis one-day certificate programme is based upon the learning outcomes for level 3 health workers detailed within the most recent Intercollegiate document 2019. Content also links with Annex C of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022 detailing role and responsibilities of Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads. \nCase study and practical learning examples are based on specific clinical practice examples and dilemmas and reference to specialist health evidence-base relevant to the role of the school nurse. Claire is a safeguarding specialist with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative multi-disciplinary teams and projects.   Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing\, and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training. Thereafter\, Claire provided a range of safeguarding consultancy\, pieces of safeguarding training\, professional conduct\, and review work on a freelance basis.  \n\nJane Graham\, MSc\, BSc\, Dip Ed.\, R.S.C.N\, BSA Group Director\, Health and Wellbeing and Director\, HIEDA \nTrained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children\, Jane has over 30 years of nursing background\, 17 of which is in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU\, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilize and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation\, all medical conditions\, and trauma. \nShe went on to teach these skills to student nurses\, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She is a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding School where she was is the Lead Nurse. On the back of setting up the school’s medical services\, she set up a first aid training company Action + First Aid. She is a freelance instructor for Qualsafe an awarding body approved by the HSE. Jane is currently the director of health and wellbeing at the boarding schools association group and director of Hieda ( health in education association) that provides training\, support\, advice and guidance for schools and workplaces on all medical matters. \nJane is actively supporting these environments to raise the standard of medical provision in order to create a mentally and physical healthier environment and workforce.

DESCRIPTION:Course outline \nSafeguarding in the online space continues to evolve along with technology and how individuals use technology for good or harm. We watch with interest the progress of the online safety bill\, seek to learn lessons from some of the tragic consequences of online harm reported in the press in the past year\, and continue to develop and implement safeguarding policy and practice in the context of child rights and strengthened requirements in KCSIE22. She has also published a number of books. \n\nKarl Hopwood \nKarl is an esafety expert and a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre and the education advisory board for CEOP. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission and several Local Authorities within the UK. \n\nSusan Stather\, Senior Internet Content Analyst\, Internet Watch Foundation \nSusan is a Senior Internet Content Analyst at the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)\, where she has worked for 6 years. In this time she has built up a solid understanding of the online child sexual abuse landscape. The remit of the IWF is to locate and assist in the removal of online child sexual abuse material\, working alongside internet service providers\, industry members and law enforcement partners. As part of the IWF’s Hotline team\, she has daily exposure to online child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Susan’s specialisms within the IWF Hotline are victim identification\, and ‘self-generated indecent imagery’. \n\nDamon De Ionno\, Managing Director\, Revealing Reality \nDamon is the joint owner and managing director of Revealing Reality\, an insight and innovation agency that takes on challenging projects with social purpose to inform policy\, design and behaviour change. He holds over 20 years’ experience working in strategic consultancy and research. \nDamon has led numerous research projects on the topics of online harms\, young people’s online behaviour and how this is influenced by digital design\, for clients such as 5Rights\, the ICO\, the BBFC\, the Office of the Children’s Commissioner\, DCMS\, the National Crime Agency and Ofcom. \nHe recently led Revealing Reality’s large quantitative and qualitative study ‘Not Just Flirting’\, which captured the experiences of over 5000 schoolchildren across the UK – providing valuable insight into the unequal experiences and consequences of nude image-sharing by young people. \n\nKathryn Tremlett\, Harmful Content Manager\, SWGfL \nKathryn is an experienced helpline practitioner with demonstrated history of working to negate safeguarding issues. Online. Kathryn is skilled in Educational Technology\, Online Safeguarding\, Child Safety\, Social Media\, Training and Curriculum Development. Kathryn has a strong educational ethos grounded with a PGCE focused on Primary School Teaching with Music Specialism from University of Exeter. \n\nWill Gardner\, CEO\, Childnet \nWill Gardner is the CEO of children’s charity Childnet International. Will joined Childnet in 2000 and was appointed CEO in 2009. He is a Director of the UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC)\, a partnership between Childnet\, the Internet Watch Foundation and the SWGfL\, and as part of the UKSIC organises Safer Internet Day in the UK\, which in February 2021 reached 51% of children and 38% of parents. He is also an Executive Board member of the UK Council for Internet Safety and chairs the Early Warning Working Group of helplines\, hotlines and law enforcement. Will also sits on Facebook’s Safety Advisory Board and Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council. \nIn his time at Childnet Will has led national and international projects\, and has led the development of Childnet’s range of award-winning internet safety programmes and resources aimed at children\, parents and carers\, and teachers and schools. \nWill was awarded an OBE in the 2018 Queen’s New Year’s Honour List for his work in the field of children’s online safety. \n\nSimone Vibert\, Head of Policy and Research\, Internet Matters \nSimone is Head of Policy and Research at Internet Matters. She is responsible for stakeholder engagement\, developing policy positions and delivering projects which aim to influence Government\, industry and more.  She leads the organisation’s programme of work on vulnerable children\, and is Chair of the UK Council for Internet Safety’s Vulnerable Users Working Group. Simone was previously a Senior Policy Adviser to the Children’s Commissioner\, leading on digital policy\, and a researcher at the think tank Demos. She started her career working for a children’s autism charity. Alice was also chair of the National LADO Network up until she took up her post at Eton. \n\nJen Ryder\, Acting Deputy Head (Academic)\, Designated Safeguarding Lead\, Badminton School \nJen Ryder is currently Acting Deputy Head (Academic) and DSL at Badminton School\, a day and boarding school for girls aged 3-18 in Bristol. She has worked in three different boarding schools over the past 15 years and held positions as Housemistress\, Head of Boarding\, Head of Mathematics and\, when her brief time on the academic side of school life ends at Easter\, will return to her permanent role as Deputy Head (Pastoral). \nHaving studied Physics as an undergraduate she then gained a DPhil in Theoretical Physics and worked in academic research for several years before becoming a Maths teacher. She has always struggled with deciding whether she prefers the academic or pastoral side of school life and has shifted between the two enjoying all the roles she has undertaken. She took on the role of DSL three years ago and finds the challenges presented by safeguarding particularly interesting and may finally have decided that the pastoral side of school life is the one for her. \n\nDavid Wright\, CEO\, SWGfL  \nDavid is the CEO of SWGfL and one of the directors for the UK Safer Internet Centre. David has worked extensively in the area of online safety for many years not only with children\, schools and wider communities but also with partner agencies such as the Police\, CEOP and Childnet. \nDavid has presented at online safety conferences both home and abroad and currently chairs the National Education Network Safeguarding Group in the UK as well as a member of the CEOP Education Advisory panel and the National Council for the NetSmartz Workshop in the US. \nDavid has been appointed to the UK Council for Child Internet Safety and actively participates with the Council’s education and public awareness working.

To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation\, all medical conditions\, and trauma. \nShe went on to teach these skills to student nurses\, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe\, an awarding body approved by the HSE. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA Group.

She is the Director of Programmes in Polocing and Lectures on subject’s related to Victimisation and Cybercrime. When Elena lectures she bings into the classroom her research experience which includes: exploring children and young people’s online behaviour\, the analysis of sexual grooming and police practice in the area of child sexual abuse\, online risks\, digital harms and victimisation. \nShe is an active researcher at the centre for Child Abuse and Trauma Studies (CATS) at Middlesex University. She has an extensive experience in both teaching and researching subjects within the criminal justice arena. She is a world leading expert in online safety and is involved in policy debates at the intersection of technology and human behaviour. Her research includes exploring online harms\, online violence against the most vulnerable\, including women and children\, the analysis of sexual abuse and police practice in child safety. She participates in highly sensitive research with the Police\, the IWF\, the NSPCC\, the OCC\, the Home Office and other government departments and has acted as an advisor on child online protection to governments and practitioners in Italy (since 2004) and Bahrain (2016) to develop a national child internet safety policy framework. As a published\, peer-reviewed author\, I have been featured by BBC\, New York Post\, Sunday Times\, The Guardian\, Channel 4\, Radio 4\, ITV\, The Times Radio. \n\nMichael Sheath\, Consultant \n\nProfessor Clare Allely\, Professor of Forensic Psychology\, University of Salford \nDr Clare Allely is a Reader in Forensic Psychology at the University of Salford in Manchester\, England and is an affiliate member of the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre at Gothenburg University\, Sweden. Clare holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Manchester and has previously graduated with an MA (hons.) in Psychology from the University of Glasgow\, an MRes in Psychological Research Methods from the University of Strathclyde and an MSc in Forensic Psychology from Glasgow Caledonian University. Clare is also an Honorary Research Fellow in the College of Medical\, Veterinary and Life Sciences affiliated to the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow. She is also an Associate of the Centre for Youth and Criminal Justice (CYCJ) at the University of Strathclyde. Clare also acts as an expert witness in criminal cases and HCPC fitness to practice cases and also contributes to the evidence base used in the courts on psychology and legal issues through her published work. \n\nKate Simlett\, Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, Tudor Hall School \nKate has been teaching and working in Boarding Schools for 22 years. Kate grew up in South Africa and after University Kate started teaching at Glenalmond College in Scotland as Head of Girls Games and a resident tutor in one of the girls’ boarding houses. Kate went on to study an MSc at Loughborough University and teach PE at Repton school\, before moving to Moreton Hall Girls School where Kate become a Housemistress\, Director of Sport\, Senior Housemistress and Director of Wellbeing. Kate is currently the Deputy Head Pastoral and DSL at Tudor Hall which is a full boarding all-girls school and has held this position for 4 years in January. SUMMARY:Advanced Certificate in Safeguarding Practice
DESCRIPTION:The SACPA Advanced Certificate in Child Safeguarding Practice is a certificate programme for safeguarding managers and leads\, heads of safeguarding\, safeguarding hub managers and co-ordinators.  It has been developed to support safeguarding colleagues from a diversity of sectors to supplement and extend designated safeguarding lead training.  This programme may also support the safeguarding practice of behaviour leads\, SENCO’s\, pastoral support leaders and Designated Teachers for Looked After Children. \nKey areas of contemporary safeguarding practice are explored in depth with particular attention to their application to leadership and management of safeguarding\, interface with governors\, trustees and board members responsible for oversight and scrutiny and the multi-agency safeguarding system beyond. \nDelegates from year 1 SACPA Advanced Certificate in Child Safeguarding Practice 2022-2023 may have the opportunity to progress to year 2 SACPA Advanced Certificate in Safeguarding Practice 2023-2024. \nOur autumn course starting in November is now fully booked. He trains police officers\, social workers and education professionals in the Child Abuse field\, and specialises in the interviewing of children\, and the assessment and investigative approach and safer recruitment training both in UK and internationally. \nRobin is a worldwide specialist in delivering child abuse awareness training to schools\, charities and volunteers and training the designated people in organisations in an advanced level of child protection. He has delivered training to and consulted with in excess of 1\,000 schools in the UK and all over the world. He has delivered safeguarding training\, and assisted in the child protection procedures\, policies\, and practices. He also helps schools to get ready for the Ofsted inspection process and\, to date\, all schools he has worked with have achieved ‘Outstanding’ in the safeguarding arena. \n\nDelyth Lynch\, Deputy Head (Safeguarding) and Mental Health Lead\, Wellington College \nDelyth has been on the senior leadership team at Wellington College for 10 years\, having previously been Deputy Head (Pastoral).  This followed a long career in boarding as Director of Extra-curricular activities and housemistress at two schools.  Delyth is the safeguarding governor and vice chair of governors at a local school and leads the local independent schools DSL cluster group.  She has also been a BSA course tutor on Certificate and Diploma courses and her work in the area of abuse in boarding schools was cited by IICSA in their recent inquiry into abuse in residential settings. \n\nDi Riley\, Director of Residential Life\, CATS Academy\, Boston\, USA \nDiane was a competitive swimmer and still teaches swimming to this day\, but she also loves cooking; there was never any doubt she would become a teacher and has often been heard to say\, “I’ve never regretted my career choice a single day!” Having taught in both state and public schools around the world\, boarding and pastoral work won out and this is firmly where she feels “at home”. Di is a Boarding Schools Association Accredited Consultants and Level Four Practitioner. She is a proud member of the newly formed Institute of Boarding. For many years she served as an Independent Schools Inspectorate Boarding Team Inspector before relocating back to the USA; here she resides with her extended family\, Chocolate Labrador & three cats! The pull to continue to work in Boarding was too strong and she is in the process of putting together a team of committed professionals at an International School in Massachusetts. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects.  Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis. \n\nGeraldine Costello\, Head of Safe Practice\, Girlguiding  \nGeraldine is the Head of Safe Practice at Girlguiding and is responsible for creating a safe environment for its members\, ensuring they are protected from harm\, abuse and exploitation.\nShe has extensive safeguarding experience having worked with the Metropolitan Police for 31 years\, dedicated to protecting vulnerable groups\, focussing on domestic abuse\, protecting adults and children at risk\, managing violent and sex offenders and working with communities.\nShe is committed to driving improvements in safeguarding standards and practice across charity sectors and government as a panel member for Department of Education\, England Netball\, a Safeguarding advisor to Surviving Economic Abuse\, and as a Safeguarding school governor. \n\nDale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA and BSA Group \nDale joined BSA Group during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s accredited training programme. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for Sacpa and BSA Group\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter\, and the Annual Safeguarding conference. He has completed “Training for Trainers” with NSPCC and was for 10 years a multi-agency safeguarding trainer for Dudley Safeguarding Children Board. \nFor 31 years Dale was practitioner in boarding schools\, and a BSA course tutor since 1998. He was also for 10 years a school Designated Safeguarding Lead. Dale is currently developing new safeguarding products for Sacpa. \n\n \nJane Graham\, Director\, Hieda \nTrained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children\, Jane has over 30 years of nursing background\, Many of them in trauma and intensive care. Whilst in PICU\, she had a number of different roles. Nine years of that included a role as a specialist retrieval nurse (CATS) that entailed travelling around the country to stabilise and bring back critically unstable children. To do this she learned advanced nursing and basic medical skills in resuscitation\, all medical conditions\, and trauma. \nShe went on to teach these skills to student nurses\, qualified nurses and junior doctors as the Practice educator on intensive care. This role also involved lecturing regularly at South Bank University. She has been a DSL for Safeguarding at an independent boarding school where she was Lead Nurse. She is also an instructor for Qualsafe\, an awarding body approved by the HSE. She is currently the director of Hieda and director of health and wellbeing for the BSA \n\nNikki Holmes\, Founder\, Safer Together  \nAfter graduating with a degree in Criminology and Psychology\, Nikki began her career as a police officer with West Midlands Police where she enjoyed a variety of different roles. This is where her passion for working with and supporting vulnerable young people began. In 2008\, and in response to increases in youth violence in Coventry\, she wrote and co-produced with young people “Get My Point” a piece of youth drama which successfully contributed to the reduction in weapon assisted crime. This work saw her presented with a Chief Constable’s Commendation. \nHowever\, it was Nikki became an Offender Manager working with some of the most prolific and complex young offenders that she identified that most\, if not all of children and young people known to the Criminal Justice System\, had a variety of vulnerabilities and unmet need. The recognition of the victim offender overlap resulted in a career change\, moving from policing into the field of substance misuse. \nAs the service manager of a young person’s substance misuse service in Warwickshire\, Nikki developed a number of pathways to improve service provision and support for children who were not actively misusing substances themselves\, but were nonetheless impacted by substance misuse due to having a parent or sibling with a substance dependency. This work was recognised by the Care Quality Commission as being innovative practice which should be replicated nationally. \nNikki went on to work for the Care Quality Commission in 2017 as a Children’s Services Inspector. In this role\, she contributed to and led a number of national reviews\, such as Children Looked After and Safeguarding (CLAS) reviews\, Joint Targeted Area Inspections (JTAI’s) and Local Area Special Educational Needs and Disability Inspections (LA SENDs). She also lent her expertise in the fields of Safeguarding and SEND to develop a number of thematic reviews such as the Control and Restraint in Children’s Home review which is awaiting publication. She remains a bank inspector for the commission. \nIn 2020 Nikki founded and launched Safer Together\, her own training and consultancy enterprise. Safer Together was commissioned in September by Coventry and Warwickshire CCG and Coventry Local Authority Public Health to lead on a Child Exploitation Project on their behalf. Safer Together recognises the challenges associated with navigating the current complexities of the safeguarding landscape and is on hand to support statutory and non-statutory organisations with any aspect of training and consultancy related to child safeguarding and SEND. \n\nAileen Kane\, Deputy CEO & COO\, BSA Group \nAileen is Deputy CEO & COO of BSA Group. Aileen leads operations at BSA providing guidance and training and works closely with government departments\, local authorities and other agencies to support members. She heads up the group’s work to find places for refugee children escaping from conflict countries and is also a trustee for a children’s charity. \n\nKarl Hopwood \nKarl is an esafety expert and a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre and the education advisory board for CEOP. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission and several Local Authorities within the UK. \n\nDavid Smellie\, Partner\, Farrer & Co. \nDavid leads Farrer & Co’s Safeguarding Unit. He has been heavily involved in advising clients on safeguarding matters over the last 15 years and\, as such\, he has witnessed the positive impact of regulatory change over the period. David led the Farrer & Co team which acted as Solicitors to the Independent Review by Hugh Davies QC into the criminal conduct of William Vahey in 2014. David has also acted as child protection governor at three schools\, and is recognised as the UK’s top-ranked schools lawyer in Chambers UK \n\nJohn Edward\, Director\, SCIS \nJohn was appointed Director (CE) of SCIS in April 2010\, having previously been Head of the European Parliament’s Office in Scotland for 6 years.  Prior to that he worked in Brussels\, as EU Policy Manager for Scotland Europa in Brussels\, and for the European Policy Centre.  He studied in St Andrews\, Glasgow and Siena\, before making his way back to Edinburgh – but is now Colombian by marriage. \n  \n\nMartin Reader\, Head\, Cranleigh School   \nMartin Reader has been Headmaster of Cranleigh School since 2014. He began his teaching career at St Edward’s Oxford\, before moving to Oundle School and then to Reigate Grammar School where he was Senior Deputy Head. Prior to moving to Cranleigh\, he was Headmaster of Wellington School\, Somerset for eight years. Passionate about boarding\, he served as Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2018\, and Vice Chair in 2017 and 2019. \n  \n\nFiona Scolding KC  \nFiona’s practice focusses upon public law challenges in a wide variety of contexts concerning both local and central government and non governmental departmental bodies. She has particular expertise in areas concerning children and vulnerable adults\, with a focus upon education\, the Court of Protection\, healthcare\, community care\, equality\, human rights and discrimination\, but also has experience in areas as varied as immigration\, prisons\, social security and general public law work. \nFiona’s work for government departments has led her to develop an expertise in public procurement\, and she has been involved (on behalf of the Legal Aid Agency) with many large scale challenges to procurement exercises since 2010. \nFiona has been recommended by the Legal 500 for her work in education law since 2002\, and is also recommended by them in administrative & public law and civil liberties & human rights.  She is recommended by Chambers & Partners for her work in education law alongside the Court of Protection and local government. \nFiona has a commitment to pro bono work. She also is on the EHRC panel counsel since 2010\, and has a keen appreciation and understanding of equality and rights legislation.  She was a member of the Attorney General’s B panel from 2013 to 2017. \nFiona is currently instructed as senior counsel to the Anglican and residential schools investigations on behalf of IICSA (the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse). \nFiona is joint head of the Public Law Group at Landmark Chambers.  \n\nMarcus Erooga – Safeguarding Consultant and Expert witness at IICSA \nMarcus Erooga is an independent safeguarding and sexual abuse Consultant\, Researcher & Trainer. From 1999-2018 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield Centre for Applied Childhood\, Youth and Family Studies. He spent the majority of his employed career in various positions at the NSPCC\, as a practitioner\, team manager and Assistant Director for service delivery as well as service and policy development roles relating to child sexual abuse and sexual offending. \nHe has authored or edited some 80 publications on child abuse and sex offender related issues. Most recently this work has focused on organisational safeguarding. In 2016 he co-authored a review of the literature on organisational risk & protective factors for the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse as well as being Expert Witness in a Royal Commission Case Study. He is an Expert Witness for the IICSA (the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse) Residential Schools inquiry. \nAs an independent consultant Marcus regularly trains and presents based on his research and undertakes safeguarding work including audits & reviews for a number of organisations. Marcus is a past Editor in Chief and current Associate Editor of the Journal of Sexual Aggression and a past Chair of NOTA (the National Organisation for the Treatment of Abuse) and is now a NOTA Fellow.

SUMMARY:Sacpa half-day seminar - Learning from Serious Case Reviews: influencing our practice
DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nLessons from Serious Case Reviews and Rapid Reviews have influenced the legislative framework\, statutory guidance and practice for safeguarding and child protection for decades. Regular bi-annual reviews and thematic research papers have enhanced our understanding of the importance of multi-agency working\, the impact of adverse childhood experiences and the co-existence of factors which are an important part of the picture in helping us develop our practice. \nAs we emerged from the peak of the pandemic\, sadly there have been a cluster of child deaths reported in the media and we await serious case review. This seminar revisits serious case reviews past and present and presents an analysis of published overview data from serious case reviews that took place in 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. Prior to joining the college Camilla had a varied nursing careers\, spending a year Nursing in Nepal\, then worked in the Emergency Departments at the Chelsea and Westminster and the North Hampshire Hospital\, where she was a sister and worked as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Camilla returned to ED during the pandemic and then subsequently joined the covid vaccination team in Basingstoke. She still works as a bank nurse in ED at North Hampshire Hospital. Camilla graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a BSc (hons) in Adult Nursing in 2002\, is married and has three children. \n\nRebecca Thomson\, Partnership Manager\, Tellmi App \nRebecca Thomson is partnership manager of Tellmi. She is passionate about supporting young people’s mental health and the importance of regulated\, evidence based mental health tools. \n  \n  \n  \n\nSarah Ashworth\, Schools and Families Program Director\, Charlie Waller Trust \nSarah Ashworth is Director of Schools and Families Programmes and a member of the Charlie Waller team delivering consultancy and training in colleges and universities. During her adolescence\, Amelia spent lengthy stays in hospital due to ill mental health. By applying her interest in art and poetry\, Amelia utilised these passions as a cathartic tool for recovery and a means of communication with family and friends. Amelia’s practice combines endurance performance\, installation and spoken word in an attempt to visualise the chaos of the mind and to open up a discourse surrounding mental health in contemporary society. Often using delicate materials and repetitive motions\, Amelia’s work can take a metaphorical stance on the fragility and vulnerability of mental wellbeing. A prize winner at the Aon Community Art Awards 2019 and recently shortlisted for the 2020 Government Art Collection\, she hopes to continue supporting her contemporaries and engaging with the community through means of social art and performance. \n\n \nKatrin Viella\, Head of Training Academy – Govox Wellbeing \nKatrin is an experienced mental health consultant and senior mental health trainer with an academic background in business and clinical psychology. She initially started out in cross-cultural leadership development and then gained experience in the clinical field working with people with most complex and severe\, enduring mental illness. Combining her training background and clinical experience she then specialised in mental health training. She established and led a fully accredited Mental Health Training Academy for the charity ‘Mind’. Her training division delivered therapeutic counselling qualifications\, whole school approaches and whole organisation mental health programs in various organisations. Over the years Katrin has trained headmasters\, GPs\, A&E staff\, education professionals\, senior executives\, middle managers and staff across all sectors and different industries. She is also a licensed and highly rated MHFA and Youth MHFA trainer and has trained hundreds of MHFAs. Her expertise lies in safe implementation strategies for these support networks. Katrin now works as an Associate Consultant and Trainer with some of the largest national and global organisations on mental health culture change programs embedding prevention\, earliest intervention\, and crisis support. Katrin is also an expert in workplace suicide prevention and cross-cultural mental health aspects. She is an advocate for earliest intervention\, post-traumatic growth and de-medicalisation of mental health approaches.

Claire leads on the development of Sacpa\, the provision of safeguarding advice and support to members and the development and delivery of CPD and safeguarding consultancy services across BSA Group. Despite describing her teaching career as ‘thoroughly rewarding’\, she is proud of the professional identity she has developed since changing careers.\nNicola’s time in frontline children and family practice came to an end when she became a senior social work lecturer supporting the learning of new entrants into the profession.  \nNicola defines herself as a champion of the rights of children\, young people and their families and regards herself as an anti-oppressive practitioner who advocates for children and families in a range of contexts. She is an avid proponent of the role of direct work with children and young people to ascertain their voice to inform assessments of their family lives as well as decisions affecting them. DESCRIPTION:Course content: \nUpdated for keeping children safe in education 2022. \nThis training is a vital safeguarding refresher for those working with children but who are not themselves the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Sacpa Director of Safeguarding\, Dale Wilkins\, formerly a Local Authority Safeguarding Trainer\, will take delegates through the legal framework\, update knowledge of definitions\, signs and symptoms of abuse\, consider specific safeguarding issues such as Child Sexual Exploitation\, County Lines and preventing radicalisation and provide thorough guidance on identifying\, recording and reporting abuse. He also sits on Twitter’s trust and safety council and the Roblox trust and safety board where he represents the Insafe network.   \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. As an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents and teachers to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy.   \nKarl has been employed for the last 14 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl is the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is also a trustee of Childnet International and an executive committee member of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association).   \nKarl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance. \n

DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nThe world of safeguarding is fast moving. Organisations should ensure that safeguarding and child protection policies integrate the essential elements referenced in a range of statutory guidance\, regulations\, advice notes and inspectorate frameworks. Leaders responsible for the management\, oversight and governance of safeguarding should also pay close attention to timely review and inclusion of research evidence\, and lessons learned from organisational\, local and national reviews\, reports and learnings. \nTo react to new legislative\, statutory and regulatory requirements\, busy organisations may take an incremental approach to review and amendment of policy. This reactive amendment approach can cause inconsistencies across the organisational policy and procedure landscape\, leaving important safeguarding blind spots unrevealed. \nSacpa recommend a proactive\, future-proofing of all safeguarding related policy. SUMMARY:Sacpa certificate - DSL: Developing Safeguarding Practice
DESCRIPTION:  \nCourse outline: \nThe designated safeguarding lead (and any deputies) should undergo training every two years to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the role and to support ongoing development of their practice. \nThis new two-day Sacpa certificate programme has been developed to support the practice of safeguarding leaders and aspiring safeguarding leaders. \nThe learning outcomes of this programme are based on the UK statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022. The topic areas and practice exercises will incorporate examples from international practice\, charity and private sector practice\, statutory guidance and safeguarding systems in devolved areas of the UK. \nThe design of this programme includes a range of teaching methods\, case study and encouragement of reflective practice and debate which brings personal and professional values\, legislative\, regulatory\, statutory frameworks and the challenges of multi-agency working into the processing of core topic areas. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe role of the safeguarding lead\nSafer organisations and a culture of listening to children\nTrauma informed practice and hidden harm\nContextual safeguarding\nOnline harm\nSpecific safeguarding topics (FGM\, forced marriage)\nChild-on-child abuse\nSEND\, vulnerability\nThe harmer\, the harmed\nPrevent duty\, exploitation and trafficking\nEarly help and commissioning early help interventions\nWorking with agencies within statutory frameworks for Children in Need\nWorking with youth justice agencies\, probation and police\nInformation sharing\nThe safeguarding leader: professional development\, the facilitator of professional development\, supervision\, coaching and wellbeing.\n\nLearning outcomes:  \n\nDelegates will understand the importance of the role the designated safeguarding lead has in providing information and support to local authority children social care in order to safeguard and promote the welfare of children or refresh their current understanding\nDelegates will explore ways of encouraging a culture of listening to children and taking account of their wishes and feelings\, among all staff\, in any measures the school or college may put in place to protect them or refresh their current knowledge and practice\nDelegates will understand the lasting impact that adversity and trauma can have\, including on children’s behaviour\, mental health and wellbeing\, and what is needed in responding to this in promoting educational outcomes or refresh their understanding\nDelegates will enhance their understanding of the unique risks associated with online safety and be confident that they have the relevant knowledge and up to date capability required to keep children safe whilst they are online at school or college or refresh their current understanding\nDelegates will develop enhanced alertness to the specific needs of children in need\, those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)\, those with relevant health conditions and young carers or refresh their current levels of alertness\nDelegates will explore the additional risks that children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) face online\, for example\, from bullying\, grooming and radicalisation and are confident they have the capability to support children with SEND to stay safe online or refresh their current knowledge and recognition or refresh their current practice\nDelegates will understand and support the school or college with regards to the requirements of the Prevent duty and are able to provide advice and support to staff on protecting children from the risk of radicalisation or refresh their current understanding\nDelegates will understand the assessment process for providing early help and statutory intervention\, including local criteria for action and local authority children’s social care referral arrangements or refresh their current understanding\nDelegates will have a working knowledge of how local authorities conduct a child protection case conference and a child protection review conference and be able to attend and contribute to these effectively when required to do so or refresh their working knowledge\nDelegates will understand the importance of information sharing\, both within the school and college\, and with the safeguarding partners\, other agencies\, organisations and practitioners or refresh their current understanding\nDelegates will focus on their own development as a professional safeguarding practitioner and on developing expertise\, so they can support and advise staff and help them feel confident on welfare\, safeguarding and child protection matters or refresh their current understanding.\n\nAudience: \n\nDesignated safeguarding leads\nDeputy designated safeguarding leads\nSafeguarding leads\nSENCOs\nDesignated teachers for looked after children\nDesignated mental health and e-safety leads with an interest in safeguarding\nOther leaders\, trustees and governors with responsibility for safeguarding oversight\nSafeguarding practitioners looking to develop their safeguarding practice and take on more responsibility.\n\nCost: \n\nSacpa Member: £390\nNon-member: £780*\n\nBOOK NOW \n*If you would like to become a member and access discounted rates for Sacpa CPD and events\, please click here.
