He holds extensive experience tackling a wide range of complex radicalisation cases in various roles\, including as a Social Worker within Children’s Services\, as Channel Coordinator within Prevent and as the Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within an NHS mental health Trust. Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. Thomas is available to deliver Prevent training to a range of organisations\, which will cover the key features of Prevent Awareness and Prevent WRAP\, including CONTEST\, the statutory duty under Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 known as the ‘Prevent Duty’\, Vulnerabilities to Radicalisation\, Extremist Ideology and groups\, Current Threat Level\, and the Channel Panel process. Thomas will provide an opportunity to have a nuanced and critical discussion about this important and complex area of safeguarding .

SUMMARY:Practice Forum - The `Enough Campaign’: how can safeguarding leads support the VAWG agenda
DESCRIPTION:Sacpa coffee morning forums are networking events\, free for members and £65 for non-members\, which run monthly throughout most of the year. These events form part of the Sacpa mission to bring safeguarding leaders and practitioners together for mutual support and learning. \nEach month safeguarding leads and practitioners meet online to network around a specific safeguarding theme. DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nThis programme is also available on a consultancy basis\, delivered face to face. \nThis Safer Recruitment Consortium accredited training course is the widely accepted UK standard for safer recruitment recognised by the government. Statutory Guidance outlines that at least one member of every appointment panel for roles involving work with children must undertake ‘proper’ safe recruitment training. \nThe Safer Recruitment Consortium has developed a Safer Recruitment package for the wider children’s workforce (this course) where previously this was solely aimed at those in the education sector. One of Elena’s key focuses is to develop innovative research and sharing her findings in international fora. She has a keen interest in understanding sexual behaviours in cyberspace and how our safeguarding policies and policing practices need to evolve to meet the challenges of the Metaverse. She provides private online harms consultation to public\, private\, and civil service organisations\, both in the UK and abroad. \nPaula has also presented to the international Ministry of Justices’ on Online Harms and the risks of Violence Against Women and Girls in a digital age\, conducted media panel discussions on the topic of risks through sexual image sharing platforms\, and gives talks on sexual image sharing\, legislation\, policy and practice. Paula began her career working in Policing Intelligence as a Sexual Offences Analyst\, and was the National Child Sexual Abuse Lead at Victim Support. \n\nKarl Hopwood\, Director E-safety  \nKarl is an independent online safety expert. He is a member of UKCIS (UK Council for Internet Safety) and sits on the UKCIS evidence group\, education working group and the early warning group as well as on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre. He also sits on the Roblox trust and safety board where he represents the Insafe network. He was recently part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance. \n\n

He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. SUMMARY:Association Forum - Sexual harassment and sexual violence: what happens when the police get involved
DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nSacpa coffee morning forums are networking events\, free for members and £65 for non-members\, which run monthly throughout most of the year. These events form part of the Sacpa mission to bring safeguarding leaders and practitioners together for mutual support and learning. \nEach month safeguarding leads and practitioners meet online to network around a specific safeguarding theme. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nLaura Nott\, Schools Project Manager\, Lucy Faithfull Foundation \nAfter qualifying and working as a probation officer in the West Midlands\, Laura was seconded to a local charity to develop a therapeutic group work programme for young men affected by domestic abuse\, helping them to understand healthy relationships. She then set up a training and consultancy business; training teachers\, social workers and police officers in protective behaviours\, safeguarding and family therapy. After managing several voluntary sector projects and organisations\, Laura now leads LFF’s multi-disciplinary Schools team\, working alongside researchers from the University of Surrey on a three-year action research project to support schools to respond to and prevent harmful sexual behaviour. \n\nNikki Holmes\, Safer Together\, Contextual Safeguarding and Exploitation \nNikki has served as a police officer\, been a service manager for a young person’ substance misuse service\, is an experienced Children’s Services Inspector for the CQC\, and more recently launched her own consultancy Safer Together www.safer-together.co.uk\, which is a proud member of the WeProtect Global Alliance. \nAn expert in safeguarding with expertise and extensive experience of working in the fields of Child Exploitation\, County Lines and Modern Slavery\, Nikki now provides independent consultancy and training to a range of organisations including the NHS and Local Authorities. \nNikki is also a guest lecturer\, a public speaker and an independent author of Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews\, Safeguarding Adult Reviews and Domestic Homicide Reviews. \n\nColin Perkins \,Chichester Diocese (DW) policy developer National Safeguarding Team – CofE Diocese Safeguarding Advisor\, Diocese of Chichester \nColin Perkins is the Safeguarding Adviser for the Diocese of Chichester\, which is the Church of England in Sussex. He has managed the Church’s response to some of the largest criminal investigations in UK history into non-recent child sexual abuse in religious settings. He gave extensive evidence to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA)\, with his team’s work being referred to as ‘best practice’\, with particular reference to partnership working with statutory agencies and responding to survivors of abuse during criminal investigations. Prior to his work in the Church of England\, Colin worked in Probation with high-risk sexual and violent offenders\, and gang members. Colin has a Post-Graduate Certificate in Forensic Behavioural Psychology\, and a Masters Degree in Advanced Child Protection \n\nMaria Strauss\, Farrer & Co \nMaria Strauss is a Partner at the law firm Farrer & Co.  She has extensive experience in safeguarding and employment law.  She acts for a variety of not for profit and education organisations including independent schools\, charities\, faith-based organisations and sports clubs.  Maria has many years’ experience in handling sensitive and complex cases for clients. She is a specialist in investigations and a trained interviewer.   Maria advises on all aspects of employment and equality law and was the lead author of the AGBIS Resource for Governors on Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion. Most recently\, Maria has advised on a number of complex cases such as bullying cases (including anonymous witnesses)\, safeguarding investigations into serious allegations with related parental complaints; whistleblowing complaints\, ‘clash of rights’ cases\, and a range of other cases involving staff\, children and parents. Maria is a governor of an independent prep school in London. \n\nCarol Carson\, Director of The AIM Project \nCarol Carson is the Director of The AIM Project one of the leading UK and international organisations in children and adolescents with harmful sexual behaviours (HSB). She has over 30 years’ experience in safeguarding children and specialising in HSB. Carol has written several books and articles on the subject\, including the AIM Assessment model for Children under 12 years old; a children’s story for working with children aged 5 – 8 years old “Johnny and the Sparkles in his Pants”; and AIM Autism and HSB Practice Guide as part of her PhD. \n  \n\nEmma Rothwell\, Assistant Head: Inclusion\, Equality & Diversity\, The Perse School \nEmma is currently Assistant Head – Inclusion\, Equality & Diversity\, a Safeguarding Lead & Chaplain at the Perse School. Her work involves driving strategy for D&I to impact positive change in culture and innovating best practice in safeguarding and managing sexual misconduct. Emma trains staff and speak nationally on D&I and safeguarding. Emma’s previous experience includes Principal and Director of Studies in a large federation. In this role she developed inclusive educational programmes for national use\, oversaw significant institutional change and worked on compliance. Emma has over 25 years’ experience of using qualitative and quantitative methods to build inclusive communities across generations in very different contexts\, as a leader\, teacher-trainer and strategist. \nEmma developed fast track for teachers with the DFE and worked as a university lecturer in education at Cambridge University and ARU teaching inclusive pedagogy. Emma is an alumnus of the national Senior Faiths Leadership Program\, Cambridge University.  Her work in this area has involved many national grassroots initiatives to develop respect between people of faith and no faith.

DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nThe aim of SACPA group safeguarding supervision sessions is to facilitate and develop a stable and trusting community of practice.
