SUMMARY:Designated Safeguarding Lead Certificate
DESCRIPTION:  \nCourse outline\n \nSafeguarding leads and particularly designated and deputy designated safeguarding leads in schools should undergo refresher training to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out their role. \nThis one-day Sacpa certificate programme has been developed at intermediate level on the Sacpa academy CPD offer and delivers the required learning outcomes detailed in annex C of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022.  Topic areas and practice examples include statutory requirements for education professionals in England\, but also incorporate international\, third sector\, and private sector examples where relevant to delegates taking part. \nThe design of the programme includes a range of teaching methods and encourages case Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis. \n\nKarl Hopwood\, Independent e-safety expert and Chair\, Sacpa \nKarl Hopwood is an esafety expert. He is a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the new UK Safer Internet Centre. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission and several Local Authorities within the UK. As an ex headteacher\, he continues to work closely with children\, young people\, parents and teachers to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl works closely with the Boarding Schools’ Association and supports many of their schools. He is also an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU safer internet programme. \n\nLaura Crandley\, Chief Operating Officer at National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) \nLaura joined NCVO in January 2021 as director of finance and services to look after their service delivery and became chief operating officer in June 2022. \nHer remit includes finance\, governance\, safeguarding\, legal\, property and technology\, our conferencing facilities\, as well as oversight of the services and partnerships team and fundraising. She is also NCVO’s company secretary. \nLaura is a qualified accountant and has an MBA from the Open University. She has worked across the private and voluntary sector in both finance and operational roles. This includes as head of finance at RNIB and as executive director of partnerships at Leonard Cheshire\, which included corporate relationships\, UK-wide programme delivery and volunteering as well as setting up a training and consultancy offer. Laura is also chair of the Midlands disability charity\, Enrych. \n\nAudrey Sime\, Deputy Head Welfare and Safeguarding\, Strathallan School \nBefore starting at Strathallan in 2002\, Audrey worked with extremely vulnerable 14 – 16 year olds who were being schooled in a special education unit and had responsibility for safeguarding and child protection. They had a multi agency approach to developing and supporting the young people. Audrey joined Strathallan as Director of Sport where she immediately joined the child protection team. Audrey has also worked as an Assistant Head Co-Curricular\, Acting Deputy head Pastoral before taking on her current role as Deputy Head Welfare and Safeguarding. Audrey is the child protection lead and is responsible for delivering all the training to the staff. \n  \n\nDavid Wright\, Chief Executive Officer at SWGfL and partner at the UK Safer Internet Centre \nDavid is CEO at SWGfL and also Director UK Safer Internet Centre; the national awareness centre and part of the European Insafe network. David has worked extensively in online safety for 20 years with children\, schools and wider agencies. He advises a number of Governments\, organisations and \nindustry partners on online safety strategy and policy and has been appointed as an expert child online protection adviser to the UN ITU \nDavid has presented at conferences nationally and internationally. He is a member of the UK Council for Internet Safety and has recently been invited to be a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Coalition for Digital Safety \nDavid has led pioneering work\, such as the development of multi award winning resources\, as well as the establishment of the helpline for victims of Revenge Porn and stopncii.org. With Plymouth University\, he has published a number of ground-breaking research reports. \n\nMichael Sheath\, Independent Safeguarding consultant \nMichael Sheath qualified as a Social Worker and Probation Officer in 1988\, he has a Master of Arts in Social Work\, and a Certificate of Qualification in Social Work. He spent ten years working in the Probation Service in community and custodial settings\, prior to joining The Lucy Faithfull Foundation in 1997. \nDuring his 25 year tenure at LFF\, Michael prepared some hundreds of ‘Expert Witness’ reports for Family Court proceedings\, and delivered hundreds of days training to social workers\, probation officers\, and police officers. He was involved in ‘whole community’ safeguarding assessments in a number of British Overseas Territories\, including Pitcairn\, and the Falkland Islands. \nMichael has acted as ‘Staff Trainer’ for Europol’s ‘COSEC’ course for fifteen years\, a 10 day course which trains police and prosecutors to investigate online sexual offences against children. He is also responsible for the well being of students and trainers on the programme\, and has delivered similar staff support training to civilian analysts in the Metropolitan Police. \nMichael sits on the Football Association’s Safeguarding Review Panel\, a quasi judicial role\, which is the final arbiter of decisions relating to fitness to engage in football. He is contracted to work with Europol\, Cepol (The European Union police training centre\, in Budapest)\, and INHOPE\, which manages the activities of Hotlines dealing with indecent content on the Internet. \nHe is the author of a play\, now a book\, ‘Crossing the Line’\, which deals with issues relating to secondary harms and vicarious trauma in investigations related to the downloading of child sexual exploitation material. \n\nVal Wright\, Head of Safeguarding at The National Federation of Young Farmers’​ Clubs and Independent Safeguarding Consultant   \nWith a background in organisational development\, governance and safeguarding in sport organisations\, charities and community groups\, as well as a 10-year career as a frontline Police Officer\, Val has worked for several governing bodies of sport to develop robust policies and procedures\, to promote best practice to create safe environments for young people’s participation in sport and dealing with cases and concerns reported within affiliated sports clubs. Now Head of Safeguarding for the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs – one of the largest rural youth organisations in the UK – Val leads on all of NFYFC’s safeguarding work\, designing and delivering safeguarding training and developing and reviewing safeguarding policies and procedures\, supporting staff to implement these within the 560+ clubs and to respond to and deal with reported concerns. \n  \n\nAneeta Williams\, Director & International Safeguarding\, Gender & Human Rights Consultant\, Bridging Worlds Consulting Ltd    \nAn international development and humanitarian advocate with a passion to prevent abuse\, violence and exploitation and bring about justice for vulnerable victims and witnesses. Called to the Bar at the Middle Temple\, Aneeta practised law for a decade while she completed her Master’s in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law followed by a Master’s in Child Studies at King’s College London. She is fully committed to her work as a certified SEAH Investigator and Trainer with the CHS Alliance\, associated safeguarding trainer with BOND\, a Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative Expert with the FCDO working on conflict-related sexual violence and as an active member to the Independent Reference Group with DFID’s Safeguarding Unit. She is currently the Designated Safeguarding Trustee on the Board of an international social enterprise\, Queen’s Commonwealth Trust and an active member of the Human Rights Committee of the Law Society. She set up her active independent consultancy services in 2014\, Bridging Worlds Consulting\, providing international aid agencies strategic advice\, support\, training and investigations on issues of safeguarding including SEAH\, gender & SGBV\, programme quality and improving organisational policies\, procedures and culture. \n\nDavid Walker \nDavid Walker holds a B.Sc. in Physics and Philosophy from the University of Bristol. He returned to Wellington College in 2019 as Deputy Head (Pastoral and Wellbeing) after previously spending 10 years at Wellington between 2006 and 2016 as Head of Physics\, Housemaster\, and Deputy Head (Performance). David will be the Director of BSA from September. \n\nSimon Davies\, Head of Safeguarding for the Scouts \nSimon Davies is the Head of Safeguarding for the Scouts\, the UK’s largest mixed youth movement. He’s passionate about helping more young people from under-represented communities step up\, speak up and gain #SkillsForLife. \nSimon comes from a law enforcement background having spent 33 years as a police officer specialising in investigation and public protection. More recently\, Simon was a Lead Inspector for His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services. He led on child protection inspections of police forces and local authorities (jointly with other inspectorates) across England and Wales. \nHe is experienced in improving safeguarding outcomes for young people through developing and delivering quality child-centred practice across statutory agencies and the voluntary sector. \n\nPeter Spindler\, Former Commander Metropolitan Police and current Independent Chair of   Westminster Abbey Safeguarding Board \nPeter is a former Metropolitan Police Commander who has been involved in child abuse investigation and safeguarding since 2000. He is now the independent chair of the safeguarding boards at Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral and sits on the Missing People safeguarding board. DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nThe designated safeguarding lead (and any deputies) should undergo training every two years to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the role and to support ongoing development of their practice. \nThis new two-day Sacpa certificate programme has been developed to support the practice of safeguarding leaders and aspiring safeguarding leaders. \nThe learning outcomes of this programme are based on the UK statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022. More recently\, after travelling the world\, Mark has identified the increased risk to independent schools as a result of the need for greater probity and due diligence in financial awareness of school suppliers\, parents and agents. Mark’s interest in this field was first sparked in 2016-17 when he supported a number of schools following the disappearance of students from Vietnam. \nMark is working in partnership with Verisio\, a specialist organisation concentrating on integrity and due diligence checks on corporations and individuals. \n\nJohn Murphie\, COO\, ISBA \nJohn has been with ISBA since February 2017.  He is responsible for the head office internal organisation and functions and he is the main point of contact for advice and guidance to schools. John spent 31 years in the Royal Navy\, retiring in 2007.  Since then\, he has worked as the Chapter Clerk in Portsmouth Cathedral\, managed a Barristers’ Chambers in London and been Bursar in two schools before joining ISBA. \n\nElena Hesse\, Principal\, Abbey College Cambridge \nEllen has worked in a variety of educational settings; all girls’ day and boarding school in Kent\, an all-through co-educational school in Surrey\, a sixth form college in Oxford. She is currently the Principal at Abbey College Cambridge and an experienced ISI inspector. Ellen will draw on her nine years’ experience as a DSL\, during which time she dealt with a few high- level safeguarding cases. She has worked with staff on identifying the group dynamics within boarding houses and understanding cultural differences\, cultural sensitivities and positive and negative leadership that underlined some safeguarding cases. \n\nLisa Morton\, Pastoral Deputy Head\, Cardiff Sixth Form College \nLisa has been working in education for many years and during her time at Cardiff Sixth Form College she has implemented a number of pastoral programmes and initiatives and is passionate about increasing resilience\, confidence and self-care amongst the student body. In 2018 Lisa founded the CREATE© Portfolio which was awarded the Welsh Independent Schools Council Award in 2019 for Wellbeing Initiative and in 2020 won the Independent Schools Association Award for Excellence in Pupil Personal Development. Lisa is dedicated to providing the very best in pastoral care for all Cardiff Sixth Form College pupils and remains committed to continuously striving for excellence in this area. Lisa is from Cardiff originally and when not at the College she enjoys spending her free time with her three favourite people – her husband and their beautiful children\, Sam and Lilly. \n\nLorna Clayton\, Academic Families \nLorna founded Academic Families in 2012 following her 13 year overseas career in Australia\, South America and East Africa. As a British Council Trained Agent\, Lorna’s knowledge and expertise ensures that our students receive the best possible advice and support leading to their educational success. \n\nSusanna De Beer\, DSL\, MPW \nSusanna de Beer has worked in international education in the UK for 14 years.  In her roles as assistant principal pastoral and international and designated safeguarding lead\, Susanna has developed a range of core ideas about the unique safeguarding needs of international students as they inhabit spaces where their cultural value systems\, identities and the challenges of global citizenship overlap. Susanna holds that it is through collaboration and reflective conversation that safeguarding practitioners not only make sense of the challenges of their vocation\, but also expand their capacity for empathy and their skills to support others. \n\nMario di Clemente\, Principal\, Bishopstrow \nMario joined Bishopstrow College in January 2022. \nMario has 35 years’ experience of independent education\, with a focus on international students.  His experience includes roles in boarding schools.  With a background in modern languages\, from September 1986 to August 1987\, Mario was Head of Spanish and Assistant Head of House at Woldingham School.  Then\, from August 1997 to August 2007\, he was Director of Studies and then Vice Principal of MPW in London\, Mario then moved to Cambridge Tutors College (CTC) in Croydon\, initially as Vice Principal from 2007 to 2008 and then as Principal from 2008 to 2014.  From CTC\, Mario progressed to Principal of CATS College in London\, an almost entirely international college with 55+ nationalities represented.  After 5 years in this role\, Mario was appointed Chief Operations Officer of Chancery Education Trust\, a Multi Academy Trust consisting of three schools in South London. \nWith two children of his own currently going through IGCSE and A Level and his background in languages and international education\, Mario understands deeply the needs and concerns of international students and parents planning the next stage of education. \n\nEmma Jennings\, Director of International Recruitment\, Mill Hill \nEmma Jennings is Director of International Pupil Recruitment for the Mill Hill School Foundation. Emma has over 20 years’ experience of managing Spring and Summer School programmes. She is a qualified teacher with experience of teaching in England and abroad. \nEmma is passionate about travel\, languages and all things international. \n\nJohn Zhang\, Managing Director Connexcel\, BSA agent and guardian \nJohn Zhang has lived in the UK for 20 years. Graduating from the University of Leeds with a master’s degree in Finance\, he was employed by two FTSE 100 international companies as a procurement director before starting his own business. Since establishing Connexcel\, he has devoted himself to helping elite private schools in China and the UK form partnerships through sister schools and cultural exchanges. John has supported schools in China with setting up new curriculums in collaboration with UK partners and training senior education personnel. He also acts a consultant for UK schools seeking advice on expanding their brand within the China. This is where her passion for working with and supporting vulnerable young people began. In 2008\, and in response to increases in youth violence in Coventry\, she wrote and co-produced with young people “Get My Point” a piece of youth drama which successfully contributed to the reduction in weapon assisted crime. This work saw her presented with a Chief Constable’s Commendation. \nHowever\, it was Nikki became an Offender Manager working with some of the most prolific and complex young offenders that she identified that most\, if not all of children and young people known to the Criminal Justice System\, had a variety of vulnerabilities and unmet need. The recognition of the victim offender overlap resulted in a career change\, moving from policing into the field of substance misuse. \nAs the service manager of a young person’s substance misuse service in Warwickshire\, Nikki developed a number of pathways to improve service provision and support for children who were not actively misusing substances themselves\, but were nonetheless impacted by substance misuse due to having a parent or sibling with a substance dependency. This work was recognised by the Care Quality Commission as being innovative practice which should be replicated nationally. \nNikki went on to work for the Care Quality Commission in 2017 as a Children’s Services Inspector. In this role\, she contributed to and led a number of national reviews\, such as Children Looked After and Safeguarding (CLAS) reviews\, Joint Targeted Area Inspections (JTAI’s) and Local Area Special Educational Needs and Disability Inspections (LA SENDs). She also lent her expertise in the fields of Safeguarding and SEND to develop a number of thematic reviews such as the Control and Restraint in Children’s Home review which is awaiting publication. She remains a bank inspector for the commission. \nIn 2020 Nikki founded and launched Safer Together\, her own training and consultancy enterprise. Safer Together was commissioned in September by Coventry and Warwickshire CCG and Coventry Local Authority Public Health to lead on a Child Exploitation Project on their behalf. Safer Together recognises the challenges associated with navigating the current complexities of the safeguarding landscape and is on hand to support statutory and non-statutory organisations with any aspect of training and consultancy related to child safeguarding and SEND.

DESCRIPTION:  \nCourse outline: \nAnxiety\, and stress anxiety in particular\, is the most common form of mental ill health\, impacting children\, young people and adults irrespective of background or gender. Anxiety can manifest in a host of different ways for different people and despite its prevalence\, still has a degree of stigma around it. SUMMARY:Coffee Morning Forum – Managing the pressures and emotional impact of holding safeguarding risk
