SUMMARY:Safer recruitment certificate
DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nThis programme is also available on a consultancy basis delivered face to face.  \nThis Safer Recruitment Consortium accredited training course is the widely accepted UK standard for safer recruitment recognised by the government. Statutory Guidance outlines that at least one member of every appointment panel for roles involving work with children must undertake ‘proper’ safe recruitment training. \nThe Safer Recruitment Consortium has developed a Safer Recruitment package for the wider children’s workforce (this course) where previously this was solely aimed at those in the education sector. He holds extensive experience tackling a wide range of complex radicalisation cases in various roles\, including as a Social Worker within Children’s Services\, as Channel Coordinator within Prevent and as the Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within an NHS mental health Trust. Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. Thomas is available to deliver Prevent training to a range of organisations\, which will cover the key features of Prevent Awareness and Prevent WRAP\, including CONTEST\, the statutory duty under Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 known as the ‘Prevent Duty’\, Vulnerabilities to Radicalisation\, Extremist Ideology and groups\, Current Threat Level\, and the Channel Panel process. DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nWe know that the prevalence of children and young people involved in vaping is a growing concern and regulation of vaping products does not support harm reduction. Young people are growing up in a world where they are very likely to encounter and could experiment with vaping or other substances. They need to know the facts\, dangers\, and myths about what they might encounter\, and how to access advice and support for their vaping use. This webinar is designed to improve the knowledge of those who are teaching\, and supporting\, young people to navigate through these issues. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

SUMMARY:Sextortion: lessons from the casefiles

DESCRIPTION:  \nCourse outline: \nThis one-day certificate programme is based upon the learning outcomes for level 3 health workers detailed within the most recent Intercollegiate document 2019.  Content also links with Annex C of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 detailing roles and responsibilities of Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads.  \nCase study and practical learning examples are based on specific clinical practice examples and dilemmas and reference to specialist health evidence-base relevant to the role of the school nurse.  This certificate programme is suitable for school nurses working in a range of education settings including state\, independent\, international\, and boarding contexts.  \nThe programme is co-facilitated by health and safeguarding practitioners and has been specifically developed to certificate school nurses for level 3 safeguarding for clinicians as well as providing certification for those school Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis. \n\n \nBeth Hudson\, Executive Director Specialist Services and Director\, BAISIS\, BSA Group \nBethan Waddington joined the BSA team as Training Manager in September 2017. Bethan has worked in two independent boarding schools in the UK and Switzerland\, the latter as Housemistress to 36 pupils. Following her time in Switzerland\, she was a Pastoral Manager for an inner-city state academy before working in the charity sector for Debrett’s running the ‘Debrett’s Foundation’ training programme. \nIn her role\, Bethan plans and manages all Day Seminars\, Conferences\, INSET and Consultancy\, as well as being Director of BAISIS. She believes boarding can be a positive force for young people and in order to fully support their needs staff can never learn too much. As such she is passionate about the CPD BSA delivers to our pastoral communities in the UK and worldwide. \n\nGaelle Sullivan\, Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA  \nGaelle is Head of Research Services and Inclusion and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nLisa Thomson\, Charlie Waller Trust \nLisa has had a long career in a variety of Mental Health settings within the NHS. She originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse in 1990 and subsequently worked in inpatient and community settings with adults\, children\, young people and their families. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England. \n\n \nLisa Jones\, Therapist and Coach\, Lisa Jones Coaching \nLisa Jones is a multi-award-winning\, science driven\, fact-based therapist\, coach and passionate trainer who believes that prevention is better than intervention. Lisa works in both the corporate and education sector teaching others the importance of brain health\, resilience\, stress management and emotional wellbeing as well as running a busy private practice. Lisa is a fully qualified and insured Psychotherapist\, Counsellor\, Wellbeing Coach and Mental Health Consultant registered with The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). She is also a senior accredited member of The National Counselling Society and The Association for Coaching. After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy\, Lisa went on to work with adults to overcome addiction and mental health issues. Having experienced chronic ill health for many years\, Lisa developed a keen interest in brain health and the brain / mind/ body connection. Lisa was fascinated by how our minds can influence our wellbeing and vice versa. After learning to manager her own health issues\, she then specialised in the field of chronic ill health and stress. Lisa went on to certify in Applied Neuroscience and Brain Health\, Applied Neuroscience and Coaching and Women’s Health and Neurobiology. She also gained a NLP Practitioner Coaching Diploma and certified as a Life Coaching Practitioner\, Youth Coach\, NLP Master Practitioner\, Hypnotherapy Practitioner\, Mental Health First Aid and completed a BPS approved certificate in clinical supervision. She is also currently studying a MA in Therapeutic Counselling and Psychotherapy. The specific focus of Lisa’s work addresses the mind-body connection and the impact our language (self-talk) and belief system has on all aspects of health and wellbeing as well as self-esteem and confidence. The principles of Neuroscience underpin the work Lisa does as she believes it is essential to educate people on how the brain works\, how to influence mindset and to understand neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to form and re-organise neural connections). By doing so\, this enables us to build resilience\, develop essential life skills and learn how to manage stress effectively. Lisa is passionate about promoting an integrative approach to Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education and believes that everyone should be equipped with essential skills to confidently manage the stresses in life\, as well as having the tools and knowledge to support young people and to be able to confidently signpost and safeguard. \n\nSkyler Moulder\, Nurse Advisor \nSkyler did her Adult Nursing BSc at Kings College London in 2011 and went straight into community nursing. After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started. \n\nKate Corbin\, Deputy Head\, West Buckland School     \nKate is currently a Deputy Head & DSL at West Buckland School in North Devon.  This is her second Deputy Headship\, having previously worked at Wycliffe College where was also Head of Boarding.  Having originally trained as an Educational Psychologist\, Kate moved into independent education to work as Head of Learning Support at Blundell’s and then moved into being a Houseparent. \n  \n\nAlice Beard\, Lead Nurse\, Sherborne Girls School  \nAlice has been a qualified nurse for coming up to 20 years\, initially specialising in orthopaedics in the local acute trust\, then working as a clinical site manager. As her own family grew\, she moved into practice nursing\, enjoying the 1-2-1 patient care and finding her passion of health promotion. \nShe started working for Sherborne Girls 8 years ago as a member of the nursing team and took over as the nurse manager 2 years ago. She loves school nursing and the age range of the pupils in her care; she has seen many changes in the needs of her pupils and every day presents a different scenario or challenge. \nHer and her team have a passion to ensure\, the pupils leave SG\, with the confidence and knowledge on how best to look after their health and wellbeing. \n\nTracey Coles\, Lead Nurse\, Wellington College \nTracey has been a Paediatric Nurse for 21 years\, completing her training at Southampton University in 2003. She enjoyed 18 years working in the NHS based on Paediatric Wards and gaining experience of different nursing disciplines such as Paediatric Oncology\, HDU\, Orthopaedics\, Surgery\, Medical\, Urology and ENT.  Through her time in the NHS\, Tracey had many opportunities for learning from starting out as a newly qualified nurse and finishing her NHS career as the Ward Sister of a 44 bed Paediatric Unit working with an awesome team of nurses\, doctors and consultants. She was excited to join Wellington College as the Nurse Manager of the Health Centre in 2021 facing new challenges; providing nursing care and health promotion to the 1100+ pupils and working closely with the pastoral team. As well as her clinical and managerial experience\, Tracey is privileged to be a mum to 3 beautiful children 8yrs\, 15yrs and 16 yrs. Being a mother to an 8 year old with autism and 2 teenagers gives her an insight and awareness to some of the challenges that our young people and parents can face on a daily basis and Tracey believes that this helps her to continually grow as a clinician and show up authentically as a leader for the Health Centre team. \n\nSarah Harris\, Senior School Nurse\, Rugby School \nSarah completed her pre-registration training at Canterbury Christ Church University College and qualified as paediatric nurse in 2000. She moved back to her home town & consolidated her learning through the 18 month newly qualified nurse programme at the Children’s Hospital at Leicester Royal Infirmary where she gained experience in medical/neurorehab\, surgical\, children’s intensive care and children’s emergency admissions. She remained on the Children’s Emergency Admissions unit before moving back to the surgical ward as a deputy sister. Sarah left the children’s hospital to undertake her BSc Hons degree in public health nursing with a Specialist Practitioner qualification in School Nursing at the University of Northampton. \nFollowing this she worked as a public health practitioner with a small school nursing caseload for a year before returning to the Children’s Emergency Admissions Unit. After the birth of her son Sarah became a Diana Children’s Community Nurse looking after children with acute\, long term and palliative conditions in their own homes and was also part of the training team delivering training packages for families\, school staff and carers of children with additional health needs. Sarah was always keen to return to school nursing and in 2014 when both her children were at school she started work at Rugby School\, becoming the senior nurse shortly after starting. Sarah leads a team of 5 nurses and 2 administrators providing healthcare support\, advice and training to the pupils and staff at Rugby School. \n\nKarenann Hood\, Deputy Head Pastoral\, Denstone College \nKarenann is currently Deputy Head Pastoral and DSL of a 4-18 day and boarding school in Staffordshire\, where she is also the Head of the Psychology Department. Karenann started her teaching life as a Teacher of Biology and Assistant Housemistress\, before taking on the running of two boarding houses prior to her current role. She have 30 years in Education\, am is an ISI inspector and a chartered Psychologist. Karenann has a deep passion for both psychology and all aspects of Pastoral life. \n  \n\nMichelle Edge\, Lead Nurse\, Denstone College \nMichelle qualified as a paediatric nurse in 1993. She worked at the Royal Stoke hospital for 25 years in acute medicine based on the wards where she gained experience in the care of children with Asthma\, Diabetes\, Epilepsy and acute medical emergencies. Michelle has also worked to support children with ongoing mental health concerns and supported transition from hospital back into the home environment with non invasive ventilation. \nMichelle joined Denstone College in 2018 taking up the role of Lead Nurse in 2023. She believes it is really important that pupils with ongoing medical conditions are fully supported and that they should have access to all aspects of an education regardless of their condition. \nDuring Covid she returned to Royal Stoke to help support the Paediatric Intensive Care team while they cared for adult patients with covid\, the Neonatal Unit and also supported to the local Covid vaccination centres. \n\nEd Poynter\, Deputy Head Pastoral\, Charterhouse School \nEd started teaching in 2010 via the Graduate Teacher Programme (University College London) following a career in the British Army where he served as an infantry officer with the Royal Green Jackets (and latterly the Rifles) in Bosnia\, Kosovo\, Northern Ireland\, Iraq and Afghanistan. \nEd taught English in London state and day schools\, before his first taste of working in a boarding environment at Ardingly College in West Sussex. Ed’s next post was as a Housemaster at Charterhouse for eight years\, before taking on his current role (also at Charterhouse) as Deputy Head (Pastoral). \nHe holds a BA in English and Classics from the University of Exeter and a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Buckingham. He is married to a pre-prep teacher and they have three school age children. \n\nLeanne Rowlands\, Assistant Head Pastoral\, Charterhouse School \nLeanne has over 20 years of boarding experience in Independent Schools\, namely St Edwards’ Oxford\, Marlborough College (UK and Malaysia)\, Tudor Hall\, Bradfield College and currently at Charterhouse School where she is Assistant Head Pastoral and a trained DSL with responsibility for Online Safety.  For over 13 years\, Leanne ran both horizontal and vertical boarding houses and then Moved to Malaysia in 2012 to set up girls boarding at Marlborough College.  She also has been a Head of Girls Sport and Head of Department (Academic Physical Education and Psychology). Alongside her role as AHP\, Leanne is also responsible for overseeing the International Pupil’s Co-ordinator\, Lead Nurse and Guardians at Charterhouse.  Leanne has been instrumental in establishing co-education at Charterhouse where she also oversees and audits the implementation of the NMS across the 15 boarding houses.

He spent ten years working in the Probation Service in community and custodial settings\, prior to joining The Lucy Faithfull Foundation in 1997. \nDuring his 25 year tenure at LFF\, Michael prepared some hundreds of ‘Expert Witness’ reports for Family Court proceedings\, and delivered hundreds of days training to social workers\, probation officers\, and police officers. He was involved in ‘whole community’ safeguarding assessments in a number of British Overseas Territories\, including Pitcairn\, and the Falkland Islands. \nMichael has acted as ‘Staff Trainer’ for Europol’s ‘COSEC’ course for fifteen years\, a 10 day course which trains police and prosecutors to investigate online sexual offences against children. He is also responsible for the well being of students and trainers on the programme\, and has delivered similar staff support training to civilian analysts in the Metropolitan Police. \nMichael sits on the Football Association’s Safeguarding Review Panel\, a quasi judicial role\, which is the final arbiter of decisions relating to fitness to engage in football. He is contracted to work with Europol\, Cepol (The European Union police training centre\, in Budapest)\, and INHOPE\, which manages the activities of Hotlines dealing with indecent content on the Internet. \nHe is the author of a play\, now a book\, ‘Crossing the Line’\, which deals with issues relating to secondary harms and vicarious trauma in investigations related to the downloading of child sexual exploitation material.

DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nSafeguarding leads and designated safeguarding leads in schools should undergo refresher training to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out their role effectively. \nThis one-day Sacpa certificate programme delivers the required learning outcomes detailed in annex C of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023. SUMMARY:SACPA/BSA - Harmful Behaviour Risk Assessments
DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nSettings have been required to complete risk assessments for many years\, often for events or school trips. They have recently been encouraged to take a risk assessment view in many other areas.  \nThis seminar will look at taking a risk assessed approach to all forms of harmful behaviour in young people. It will look at this both from an individual and a whole-setting perspective. We will examine the range of harmful behaviours present in settings today and look at how to identify and respond to them. We will do this with reference to the latest version of Keeping Children Safe in Education and Ofsted’s review of sexual abuse in schools.  \nThe seminar will look at how to best respond when an individual case of harmful behaviour has been identified. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nDavid Walker\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA Group\, TIOB \nDavid is the Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB  and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Following her time in Switzerland\, she was a Pastoral Manager for an inner-city state academy before working in the charity sector for Debrett’s running the ‘Debrett’s Foundation’ training programme. \nIn her role\, Bethan plans and manages all Day Seminars\, Conferences\, INSET and Consultancy\, as well as being Director of BAISIS. She believes boarding can be a positive force for young people and in order to fully support their needs staff can never learn too much. As such she is passionate about the CPD BSA delivers to our pastoral communities in the UK and worldwide. \n\nKarl Hopwood\, E-safety Expert \nis an independent online safety expert. He is a member of UKCIS (UK Council for Internet Safety) and sits on the UKCIS evidence group\, education working group and the early warning group as well as on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre. He also sits on the Roblox trust and safety board where he represents the Insafe network. He was recently part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance. \n\nDavid Smellie\, Head of Safeguarding Unit\, Farrer & Co \nDavid Smellie for many years headed the firm’s employment team and schools group\, and today\, whilst remaining a key member of both\, he separately leads the firm’s market leading safeguarding unit. \nIn advising schools David focuses on issues relating to staff\, pupils and parents – from sensitive dismissals to pupil exclusions and parental complaints.  David’s leadership of the safeguarding unit stems from many years of advising schools on safeguarding and child protection.  He founded the firm’s safeguarding unit in 2015 which advises organisations either working or coming into contact with children.  These include schools\, universities\, charities\, churches and religious organisations\, visitor attractions\, sports clubs and the medical sector.  David advises on the full range of safeguarding issues\, from creating safer systems to handling live cases and carrying out retrospective reviews.  He is particularly well known for his role in advising on the Southbank International Vahey case where he led the Farrer & Co team in conducting the Independent Review of Hugh Davies QC and in advising Chelsea FC on its independent reviews of non-recent child sexual abuse\, current safeguarding systems\, and non-recent racial abuse. \n\nDelyth Lynch\, Director of Safeguarding\, Wellington College \nDelyth has been on the Senior Leadership Team at Wellington College for 10 years\, having previously been Deputy Head (Pastoral). This followed a long career in boarding as a Director of Extra-Curricular activities and Housemistress at two schools. \nIn 2018 she was awarded the BSA Research Fellowship; Delyth conducted her research on ‘Abuse in Boarding Schools\, probing into an area where there was little research or literature available. Her paper won the National Research Award (2019). Her innovative work in the pastoral education of parents saw her winning the TES ‘Boarding Initiative of the Year’ award (2016) and in 2020 the inaugural Wellington College ‘Community Mental Health Day’ was recognised with them winning the BSA ‘Wellbeing and Mental Health Initiative of the Year’. Wellington College currently holds the Gold Status in School Mental Health through the Carnegie Centre of Excellence. \nDelyth is the Safeguarding Governor and Vice Chair of Governors at a local school and leads the Local Independent Schools DSL cluster group. She has also been a BSA course tutor on the Certificate and Diploma Courses and her work in the area of abuse in boarding schools was cited by IICSA in their recent inquiry into abuse in residential settings. \nIn her spare time\, Delyth enjoys running around with her 4 year old daughter and triathlon. \n\nSimon Hill\, Deputy Head\, Christ College Brecon \nSimon grew up in Eastbourne\, East Sussex and was educated at Eastbourne College. He gained a BA (Hons) Geography at Kings College London University and a PGCE at the Institute of Education\, London. He started his career as a teacher of geography at King Edward’s School\, Surrey\, before moving to Glenalmond College\, Perth where he was Senior Housemaster. In 2010\, Simon was appointed as Director of Boarding at Brisbane Grammar School\, Queensland\, before moving back to the UK to join Christ College as Deputy Head (Pastoral) in 2016.  His focus is on pupil wellbeing\, the second curriculum and sport of all types.  He also runs the school’s annual pupil exchange programme to Japan. \n\nClare McDonnell\, Safeguarding Lead\, Fettes College \nClare studied Classics at the University of St Andrews and then went straight to the University of Cambridge to do her PGCE in Classics teaching. She started her teaching career at Oundle School\, where she was also the Assistant Houseparent in a girls’ boarding house\, and the Deputy Child Protection Officer. After four years Clare moved to Fettes College as a Classics teacher and was delighted to be back in Scotland. She was the Assistant Houseparent in a girls’ boarding house for five years\, and has been the Child Protection Co-ordinator since 2018. She joined the Senior Management Team in 2023 as the Safeguarding Lead. \n\nProfessor Claudia Bernard\, Professor of Social Work\, Goldsmiths University of London \nClaudia Bernard is Professor of Social Work at Goldsmiths\, University of London. She has a background in social work and her research interests lie in the areas of safeguarding\, child abuse and neglect\, and the impact of systemic equalities on child and family welfare. She has written widely on these topics\, including a book entitled Constructing Lived Experiences: Representations of Black Mothers in Child Sexual Abuse Discourses (2nd Edition\, Routledge\, 2017)\, and an edited collection entitled Safeguarding Black Children: Good Practice in Child Protection (Jessica Kingsley Publishers\, 2016). Her latest book Intersectionality for Social Workers: A Practical Introduction to Theory and Practice (2022) is published by Routledge. Professor Bernard has pioneered research on child neglect in affluent families. \n\nSimon Cane-Hardy\, Head\, Gordonstoun  \nSimon studied History at Cardiff University and worked in London before undertaking teacher training. He then taught History\, became a Head of Department\, Boarding Housemaster and Head of Boarding. He coached Rugby and Cricket and plays sport to an average level! In 2016 Simon moved to Prior Park College in Bath as Deputy Head. He moved to Gordonstoun as Head in 2023 where he lives on campus with his wife Helen and their three children\, who attend the Gordonstoun Prep School. \n  \n\nMario Di Clemente\, Education Consultant \nMario is a modern languages graduate and qualified teacher who started out as Head of Spanish at Woldingham School before taking up a Director of Studies post at MPW London where he eventually became Vice Principal in 2001. He has occupied senior leadership and management positions ever since including as Principal of three colleges with international students: Cambridge Tutors College in Surrey\, CATS College in London and Bishopstrow College in Wiltshire. He has also served as Chief Operations Officer of an Academy Trust in London and as a secondary school governor. Mario’s experience extends to both the independent and state sectors and in both day and boarding schools. He has led schools through highly successful inspections and has served as an ISI school inspector. He has also been a trustee on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) and served as Chair of the Council for Independent Further Education (CIFE). Mario has been involved with BAISIS for over a decade and shares the priority of its members to provide a soft landing\, nurturing environment and a memorable British educational experience for its diverse international student community. \n\nBronwyn Kidd\, Deputy Head\, St Neot’s Preparatory School \nBronwyn Kidd serves as the Deputy Head of St Neot’s Preparatory School\, with 14 years of senior leadership experience in education. Educated in South Africa with a foundation in primary education\, Bronwyn’s own school experiences have shaped her vision and commitment to the pastoral care of young people\, particularly in guiding children through the key transition to adolescence and senior school. \nIn addition to her role at St Neot’s\, Bronwyn serves as a local state school governor\, further contributing to the educational community and sharing her expertise in child wellbeing. Bronwyn is also a proud parent to two children who are thriving in the prep school environment\, which fuels her personal passion for fostering nurturing and supportive school settings. Over the past four years\, Bronwyn has been focused on safeguarding and pastoral care across the school\, ensuring that as a community\, they are dedicated to proactive mental health care. The culture and pastoral care\, resulting in high standards of behaviour\, were recognised as a significant strength by ISI in 2024. This focus ensures that every pupil feels valued\, resilient\, and ready to flourish both academically and personally. \n\nChris MacInnis\, Designated Safeguarding and Mental Health Lead\, Ardingly College \nChris has been working in education since 2008\, where a medical condition forced a change of career. In all his time in education he has been a non-teaching member of staff. Working through a number of support and pastoral roles\, before becoming DSL of a state secondary school in 2018. he stepped away from schools for a year to sit in the West Sussex Mash Team as an Education advisor\, supporting DSL’s from around the county with concerns\, being part of auditing teams\, supporting with the restructure of MASH referrals and representing education settings in a number of external meetings. Being part of the MASH team was a valuable experience\, but he recognised his passion laid with supporting young people directly\, and he was fortunate enough to be offered the DSL and Mental Health Lead here at Ardingly College. \nIn 2018\, Chris completed his degree at University Of Brighton in Working with Children and Young people\, along with his Senior Mental Health Leader certificate and SACPA Advanced Certificate in Child Safeguarding Practice in 2023. \nHe is keen to enhance his learning regularly and often transfer his learning to staff training\, weekly Safeguarding Snippets for staff or presenting to students in house to help keep them safe. His ethos to working is providing students with clear factual information which allows them to make informed decisions\, this can lead to some very interesting conversations\, led by the student’s desire to learn at an age-appropriate level. Student’s will go off to take risk’s and make mistakes\, his unconditional positive regard approach helps turn these incidents into learning opportunities. \n\nSuchita Prakash\, DSL and Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, Mill Hill International  \nSuchita effectively combines her diverse track results in leading education with computer engineering education. Initially trained as a computer engineer\, Suchita commenced her career as a software development consultant before transitioning to teaching. Her multi-decade teaching leadership spans GCSE and A-Level Computer Science and Mathematics in both state and independent schools across several cultures. In these leadership roles\, Suchita has collaborated closely with various safeguarding agencies to prioritise the welfare of students. \nHer work at Mill Hill International is deeply rooted in her academic pursuits and her unwavering commitment to supporting the well-being of students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Suchita is also pursuing research at Oxford University focused on the pastoral challenges faced by international families.  \n\nGeorgina Sayers\, Assistant Head Pastoral and Wellbeing\, Ardingly College \n  \n  \n  \n\nProfessor Elena Martellozzo\, Professor in Criminology\, Associate Director\, Centre for Child Abuse and Trauma Studies (CATS)\, Middlesex University \nDr Elena Martellozzo is an Associate Professor in Criminology and Associate Director at the Centre for Child Abuse and Trauma Studies (CATS) at Middlesex University. Elena has been working in the area of cyber violence for 15 years and is now recognised as a world leading expert in the area\, focusing primarily on online harms\, online safety and is involved in policy debates at the intersection of technology and human behaviour. One of Elena’s key focuses is to develop innovative research and sharing her findings in international fora. She continually attracts research funding in highly sensitive areas with government departments including the police\, the Internet Watch Foundation\, the NSPCC\, the Children Commissioner for England\, the Home Office. She has acted as an advisor on child online protection and online violence against women and girls to governments and practitioners in Italy (since 2004) and Bahrain (2016) to support the development of national child internet safety policy frameworks. Elena is a lead researcher in the area and has led a number of high impact project\, nationally and internationally. As a published peer-reviewed author\, and well-established national and international Criminologist\, she is regularly invited as a speaker by the BBC\, New York Post\, Sunday Times\, The Guardian\, Channel 4\, Radio 4\, ITV\, The Times Radio. \n\nPaula Bradbury\, Criminology and Policing Practice Lecturer\, University of Middlesex\n \nPaula Bradbury is a lecturer in Criminology and Policing Practice at the University of Middlesex.  She is also the Senior Researcher at the Centre for Abuse & Trauma Studies engaging in multiple research projects and bid writing opportunities\, the results have led to several successful grants awarded. She is a doctoral researcher studying for a PhD in Criminology\, exploring the appropriateness of policy and policing practice in response to adolescents sharing nudes. \nPaula is a published\, peer reviewed author\, specialising in the field of online harms\, child sexual abuse and exploitation\, stalking\, sexual violence\, offender pathways and adolescent digital behaviours. She has a keen interest in understanding sexual behaviours in cyberspace and how our safeguarding policies and policing practices need to evolve to meet the challenges of the Metaverse. She provides private online harms consultation to public\, private\, and civil service organisations\, both in the UK and abroad. \nPaula has also presented to the international Ministry of Justices’ on Online Harms and the risks of Violence Against Women and Girls in a digital age\, conducted media panel discussions on the topic of risks through sexual image sharing platforms\, and gives talks on sexual image sharing\, legislation\, policy and practice. Paula began her career working in Policing Intelligence as a Sexual Offences Analyst\, and was the National Child Sexual Abuse Lead at Victim Support. \n\nBoglarka Meggyesfalvi\, Researcher in Child Protection and Online Safety\, Middlesex University \nBoglárka Meggyesfalvi is a researcher and doctoral candidate\, focusing on child protection and online harms. She is engaged in ongoing research projects that aim to influence policy and practice in the field of child online safety. Boglárka is a published author\, having written peer-reviewed articles and practical guides that examine youth participation\, policing social media\, and critical issues such as child sexual exploitation and first-person generated intimate imagery. \nWith extensive experience in international project management and evaluation in the EU and Latin-America\, Boglárka has successfully coordinated initiatives across multiple countries aimed at improving youth participation and child protection systems\, as well as working in the areas of advocacy and legislative compliance. \nShe previously served as a Child Rights Representative senior officer for the Hungarian Home Office\, where she engaged with high-ranking government officials to audit alternative care providers\, and promote child rights initiatives. She contributed to the development of policies aimed at preventing child sexual abuse and exploitation online. Additionally\, her work includes delivering training for police forces\, professionals in educational settings\, and organise expert seminars on safeguarding children online and offline.

The study focused on the experiences of safeguarding professionals supporting young people who experience suicidal ideation. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis. \n\nGaelle Sullivan\, Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA \nGaelle is Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East.
