SUMMARY:Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Level 3 Advanced Certificate (2 Days)
DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nThe designated safeguarding lead (and any deputies) should undergo training every two years to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the role and to support ongoing development of their practice.  \nThis two-day (Level 3) Sacpa advanced certificate programme has been developed to support the practice of safeguarding leaders and aspiring safeguarding leaders.  \nThe learning outcomes of this programme are based on the UK statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024. The topic areas and practice exercises will incorporate examples from international practice\, charity and private sector practice\, statutory guidance and safeguarding systems in devolved areas of the UK.  \nThe deign of this programme includes a range of teaching methods\, case study and encouragement of reflective practice and debate which brings personal and professional values\, legislative\, regulatory\, statutory frameworks and the challenges of multi-agency working into the processing of core topic areas.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe role of the safeguarding lead \nSafer organisations and a culture of listening to children \nTrauma informed practice and hidden harm \nContextual safeguarding \nOnline harm \nSpecific safeguarding topics (FGM\, forced marriage) \nChild-on-child abuse \nSEND\, vulnerability \nThe harmer\, the harmed \nPrevent duty\, exploitation and trafficking \nEarly help and commissioning early help interventions \nWorking with agencies within statutory frameworks for Children in Need \nWorking with youth justice agencies\, probation and police \nInformation sharing \nThe safeguarding leader: professional development\, the facilitator of professional development\, supervision\, coaching and wellbeing. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nUnderstand the importance of the role the designated safeguarding lead has in providing information and support to local authority children social care to safeguard and promote the welfare of children or refresh their current understanding \nExplore ways of encouraging a culture of listening to children and taking account of their wishes and feelings\, among all staff\, in any measures the school or college may put in place to protect them or refresh their current knowledge and practice \nUnderstand the lasting impact that adversity and trauma can have\, including on children’s behaviour\, mental health and wellbeing\, and what is needed in responding to this in promoting educational outcomes \nEnhance their understanding of the unique risks associated with online safety and be confident that they have the relevant knowledge and up to date capability required to keep children safe whilst they are online at school or college \nDevelop enhanced alertness to the specific needs of children in need\, those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)\, those with relevant health conditions and young carers or refresh their current levels of alertness \nExplore the additional risks that children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) face online\, for example\, from bullying\, grooming and radicalisation and are confident they have the capability to support children with SEND to stay safe online or refresh their current knowledge and practice \nUnderstand and support the school or college with regards to the requirements of the Prevent Duty and provide advice and support to staff on protecting children from the risk of radicalisation \nUnderstand the assessment process for providing early help and statutory intervention\, including local criteria for action and local authority children’s social care referral arrangements \nHave a working knowledge of how local authorities conduct a child protection case conference and a child protection review conference and be able to attend and contribute to these effectively when required to do so or refresh their working knowledge \nUnderstand the importance of information sharing\, both within the school and college\, and with the safeguarding partners\, other agencies\, organisations and practitioners \nFocus on their own development as a professional safeguarding practitioner and on developing expertise\, so they can support and advise staff and help them feel confident on welfare\, safeguarding and child protection matters.  \n\nAudience:  \nLevel 3 certificate training for DSL’s DDSLs\, SENCO’s\, Designated teachers for Looked After Children\, Senior Leaders\, Trustees\, Governors  \nA similar SACPA two-day DSL programme is also available on a consultancy basis where organisations have several colleagues in\, or aspiring to be in\, safeguarding leadership roles. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

DESCRIPTION:Course outline: \nWe know that the prevalence of children and young people involved in vaping is a growing concern and regulation of vaping products does not support harm reduction. Young people are growing up in a world where they are very likely to encounter and could experiment with vaping or other substances. They need to know the facts\, dangers\, and myths about what they might encounter\, and how to access advice and support for their vaping use. This webinar is designed to improve the knowledge of those who are teaching\, and supporting\, young people to navigate through these issues. Attendees will receive a full update on current facts and figures surrounding vaping concerns along with information on current Government strategies to combat the sale and promotion of these devices\, in particular to teenagers. He does not preach and delivers his presentations in a ‘non judgemental manner’ in his own ‘unique style’\, ensuring that his audiences engage with him from the very minute he starts to speak. He holds extensive experience tackling a wide range of complex radicalisation cases in various roles\, including as a Social Worker within Children’s Services\, as Channel Coordinator within Prevent and as the Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within an NHS mental health Trust. Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. Thomas is available to deliver Prevent training to a range of organisations\, which will cover the key features of Prevent Awareness and Prevent WRAP\, including CONTEST\, the statutory duty under Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 known as the ‘Prevent Duty’\, Vulnerabilities to Radicalisation\, Extremist Ideology and groups\, Current Threat Level\, and the Channel Panel process. Statutory Guidance outlines that at least one member of every appointment panel for roles involving work with children must undertake ‘proper’ safe recruitment training. \nThe Safer Recruitment Consortium has developed a Safer Recruitment package for the wider children’s workforce (this course) where previously this was solely aimed at those in the education sector. It was whilst working as an Integrated Offender Manager (IOM) that she developed a greater understanding of the issues of exploitation\, serious youth violence and trauma. \nNikki recognised that as much as she had a passion for policing\, she wanted to use the knowledge she had acquired to support children and young people\, rather than as she described ” be complicit in punishing them for their abuse.” This resulted in her taking the brave step of leaving a job she thought she would do for life. \nThe next step for Nikki was to work in the field of substance misuse\, where she managed and developed a young person’s substance misuse service in Warwickshire. She led the development of Hidden Harm Pathways\, ensuring that children of parents dependent on substances were no longer invisible and in receipt of the support they needed. This work was recognised by the CQC as an exemplar of outstanding and innovative practice that should be replicated nationally. \nIn May 2017\, Nikki joined the CQC as a Children’s services inspector where she led and contributed to a range of National Review processes including LA SEND inspections\, JTAI’s and Children Looked After and Safeguarding (CLAS) reviews. She also managed a portfolio of children’s homes\, supporting them to meet the complex needs of children in a way that was responsive and trauma informed. She remains a bank Children’s Services Inspector today. (CSI) \nIn 2020\, in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic\, Nikki launched Safer Together. “For me\, the pandemic was a moment of clarity\, a moment where I reflected on what I learnt as a CSI and a moment where I thought I want to share the learning to support fatigued practitioners and systems to navigate the complexities of the world our children live in\, to come together\, work together to make society safer.” \nIn addition to heading Safer Together\, Nikki is also an accredited SILP reviewer and author of Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHRs)\, Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs) and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (CSPRs). She is also a researcher\, and a visiting lecturer of criminology and psychology. \nIn the little spare time she has\, she fills her cup by spending as much time with her two boys\, Joe and Flynn\, the two not so little people who inspire her every day to be better and do better so that their world\, and the world for their children is a safer\, fairer and a more compassionate place.

Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.
